Chapter 9 - A New Beginning

Six months later, Rowan Industries hosted its annual charity gala and community partner dinner at the grand ballroom of the Mercer Plaza Hotel.

It was a glittering affair of crystal chandeliers, orchestral music, and tailored evening wear, celebrating not just corporate financial success, but the company's groundbreaking community uplift initiatives and labor reform advocacy.

Rowan Marlo stood near the edge of the grand ballroom, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching the room with his usual calm detachment.

Then, his gaze drifted toward the center dance floor.

There stood Clara Brooks, wearing an elegant emerald-green evening gown, laughing softly as she danced with one of the newly appointed senior directors—a testament to her remarkable rise from a desperate night-cleaner to the respected Head Facilities Supervisor of Rowan Industries.

A few feet away, sitting at a small table near the dessert bar, sat Lily.

She wore a pretty pink dress with a matching white bow in her hair, happily eating a chocolate cupcake while chatting animatedly with Sarah Jenkins, who was laughing out loud at something the little girl had said.

Rowan felt a strange, unfamiliar warmth settle in his chest—not the cold, calculated satisfaction of a closed deal or a rising stock ticker, but something deeper, more enduring.

As he watched them, Clara looked across the crowded room and caught his eye. She didn't bow or nod formally; instead, she raised her glass of sparkling cider toward him in a silent, profound gesture of gratitude and mutual respect.

Rowan raised his glass back, offering a rare, genuine, ghost of a smile.
