Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Apex Sanitation

Within forty-eight hours, the corporate world of Mercer Avenue was rocked by an earthquake that originated on the twenty-third floor of Rowan Industries.
Apex Sanitation, a multimillion-dollar commercial cleaning conglomerate known for its aggressive cost-cutting and ruthless treatment of low-wage workers, received a legal torpedo that left them no room to maneuver.
Rowan Marlo did not merely terminate their contract; he unleashed his elite corporate legal team—led by senior partner Harrison Vance—coupled with a comprehensive dossier of labor violations, tax evasions, and safety infractions compiled in less than twenty-four hours.
By Wednesday afternoon, the CEO of Apex Sanitation, Marcus Thorne, found himself sitting across a glass conference table from Rowan Marlo, sweating profusely despite the sub-zero air conditioning.
"Mr. Marlo, this... this is extreme," Thorne stammered, sliding a sheaf of compliance warnings across the table. "A few administrative oversights regarding independent contractor classifications shouldn't invalidate a five-year multimillion-dollar partnership—"
Rowan sat back in his ergonomic leather chair, his fingers steepled together beneath his chin, his gaze cold, flat, and devoid of any mercy.
"Oversights, Mr. Thorne?" Rowan’s voice cut like a surgical blade. "You systematically cheated hundreds of vulnerable workers out of overtime pay, denied them health coverage while forcing them into hazardous night shifts, and drove employees like Clara Brooks to physical collapse. You didn't make oversights. You built a business model on exploitation."
"We operate within industry standards!" Thorne protested, his face flushing red. "Every cleaning agency in the city does this to stay competitive!"
"Then every cleaning agency in the city is about to find out what happens when Rowan Industries decides to raise the standard," Rowan replied smoothly. He slid a single legal document forward across the table. "You have two choices, Mr. Thorne. Option one: You sign this immediate settlement agreement, releasing all back wages to your current and former employees with a 50% statutory penalty, and you resign as CEO effective immediately."
Thorne swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly. "And... and option two?"
"Option two is a criminal referral to the state attorney general's office for wage theft and labor fraud, followed by a federal audit that will tear your corporate structure apart down to the studs. By Friday, you won't just be out of a job; you’ll be facing indictment."
Thorne stared at the document, then up at Rowan’s expressionless face. He realized, with a sickening jolt of absolute terror, that Rowan Marlo wasn't bluffing. Men like Rowan didn't bluff—they executed.

With shaking fingers, Thorne picked up the silver fountain pen lying on the table and signed his name at the bottom of the page.
Rowan retrieved the signed document without a word, stood up, straightened his Italian suit jacket, and walked out of the conference room without sparing the disgraced CEO another glance.
