Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

Rowan stepped closer to the hospital bed, his gray eyes fixed steadily on Clara Brooks.

"Mrs. Brooks," Rowan said, his voice dropping into the smooth, commanding register he usually reserved for hostile corporate takeovers. "Listen to me very carefully. You are not going to worry about hospital bills. You are not going to worry about rent, or food, or debt collectors."

Clara opened her eyes, staring at him in utter disbelief. "Sir... what are you talking about? That's thousands of dollars. I work for Apex Sanitation. They pay minimum wage—"

"Apex Sanitation is a third-party subcontractor that currently holds a cleaning maintenance contract with Rowan Industries," Rowan interrupted smoothly. "Or, more accurately, they did hold a contract with Rowan Industries as of twenty minutes ago."

Clara froze. "You... you canceled their contract?"

"I terminated it with cause," Rowan corrected coldly. "My legal team spent the last twenty minutes pulling their audit history. They have systematically misclassified their night-shift cleaning crews as independent contractors to bypass labor laws, withheld overtime compensation, and failed to provide basic medical insurance mandated by municipal code. They have been stealing from you and dozens of workers like you."

Clara stared at him as if he were speaking a foreign language. "But... they're a huge company. You can't just..."

"I built Rowan Industries from a desk in a basement, Mrs. Brooks," Rowan said, his tone absolute. "I can dismantle a parasitic sanitation vendor before lunch."

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a thick gold-embossed business card—different from the one he used in the lobby—and laid it gently on the edge of Clara’s bedside table, right next to a plastic cup of water.

"Here is what is going to happen," Rowan stated, ticking off points with calm precision. "First, you are going to focus entirely on recovering. Your medical care here at Mercy General has been transferred to Rowan Industries' executive health tier, meaning all costs are fully covered, past, present, and future."

Clara’s lips parted in shock, tears welling up faster than she could wipe them away. "Sir... I can't accept this. I didn't earn—"

"Second," Rowan continued, ignoring her protest entirely, "when you are discharged, you will not return to that motel room. My corporate housing division maintains fully furnished, secure apartments near the city center. A two-bedroom unit has already been assigned to your name. Rent is zero."

Lily looked up from her mother’s hand, her slate-colored eyes wide with wonder, staring at Rowan as if he were a wizard who had just turned lead into gold.

"Third," Rowan finished, looking directly into Clara's tear-filled eyes, "Apex Sanitation is being sued for back wages and statutory damages on behalf of every cleaner they exploited. Once you are well, you will be offered a direct, full-time position as the Head Facilities Supervisor of our Mercer Avenue headquarters—with a living wage, full medical benefits, paid sick leave, and a salary that ensures you will never have to choose between medicine and food again."

The room fell into a profound, breathless silence. The heart monitor beeped rhythmically in the background.

Clara tried to speak, but her voice completely failed her. She covered her face with her trembling hands, her shoulders shaking as silent, heavy tears of absolute relief poured through her fingers.

Lily gently climbed up onto the edge of the hospital bed, curling her small body against her mother’s side, burying her face in her shoulder while keeping one small hand firmly locked around Rowan’s coat sleeve.

May you like

Rowan stood quietly for a moment, looking down at the two of them. For a man who had spent his entire life measuring success in numbers, profit margins, and market dominance, this moment felt strangely... complete.

"Rest, Mrs. Brooks," Rowan said softly, turning toward the door. "I have a sanitation company to put out of business."
