Chapter 9 - Whispers Under the Stars

As evening settled over the neighborhood, painting the sky in deep shades of amber and violet, Kevin and Daisy sat out on the back porch wrapped in thick wool blankets. A small fire crackled in the stone fire pit, casting a warm, dancing glow across their faces.

Daisy leaned back comfortably against Kevin’s chest, her small shoulders relaxed, staring up at the brilliant canopy of stars beginning to emerge in the twilight sky.

“Papa?” she murmured softly, her voice heavy with the pleasant exhaustion of a long, happy day.

“I’m right here, sweet girl,” Kevin whispered, wrapping his arms securely around her, holding her close against the evening chill.

“Do you remember when we lived in the other house?” she asked, her voice calm, devoid of the old panic or shadow.

Kevin paused for a fraction of a second, his heart tightening slightly before he answered with steady gentleness. “I remember, Daisy.”

“I used to think the dark would never go away,” she said quietly, turning her head to look up at him with absolute trust in her eyes. “I thought the bad feelings were going to live in my back forever.”

Kevin kissed her forehead gently, letting the warmth of his love wash away any lingering echoes of the past. “The dark can only stay as long as we let it hide in the corners, sweetheart. But we turned on the lights. And the light is always stronger than the dark.”

Daisy smiled, a peaceful, radiant expression that lit up her whole face. She leaned her head back against his shoulder, her breathing slowing down into the rhythmic, even cadence of deep contentment.

“I love you, Papa,” she whispered into the cool night air.

“I love you more than life itself, Daisy,” Kevin replied softly, looking out across their peaceful backyard toward the river beyond.

They sat together by the fire long after the stars reached their zenith, two souls who had weathered the worst of storms and found their way safely to the other side.
