Chapter 4 - The Hidden Evidence

By 2:00 AM, the atmosphere in the hospital exam room had shifted from a medical emergency to a formal investigative setting. Detective Vance, a seasoned investigator with the city’s Child Exploitation and Protection Unit, sat across from Kevin at a small consultation table just outside Daisy’s room. Daisy was currently undergoing her X-ray scan down the hall, accompanied by a pediatric nurse.
Detective Vance flipped open a small leather notebook, his expression weathered and entirely professional.
“Mr. Parker,” Vance began, his voice deep and gravelly. “The preliminary assessment from Dr. Hayes confirms severe blunt-force trauma to the lumbar region. The X-rays will tell us if there's a fracture, but regardless of structural bone damage, the pattern of the bruising strongly corroborates your daughter’s initial statement.”
“Where is Clara?” Kevin asked, rubbing his tired eyes. The adrenaline that had sustained him for the last few hours was finally wearing off, leaving a dull, bone-deep ache in its place.
“She’s in the administrative waiting lounge with another officer,” Vance replied. “She refused to answer any questions without her attorney present, which is her legal right. However, based on the severity of the injury, the medical report, and your official statement regarding her erratic and coercive behavior toward the child, we have grounds to issue a temporary restraining order and a protective custody hold.”
Kevin nodded slowly. He knew this was only the beginning of a long, agonizing legal battle, but the heavy fog of uncertainty had lifted. He knew what had to be done.
“What happens next?” Kevin asked.
“Once Daisy is cleared from imaging, we can discharge her into your sole custody, provided you stay at a separate residence away from the family home for the time being,” Vance explained. “We will execute a search warrant on your residence tomorrow morning to secure the closet where the incident allegedly took place, collect forensic evidence, and review any home security or smart-device logs if available.”
Kevin stopped. Home security logs.
For a moment, he sat in stunned silence as a crucial detail clicked into place in his mind.
“Smart home system,” Kevin whispered.
Detective Vance looked up, raising an eyebrow. “What did you say?”
“Our house,” Kevin said, leaning forward across the table, his heart suddenly racing with a new kind of urgency. “We have an integrated smart-home ecosystem. Cameras in the main hallway, smart locks, motion sensors in every room, and automated voice-recording logs linked to the central hub. Clara thought she turned off the interior hallway camera last month when she updated the firmware, but I reconfigured the backup server to sync directly to my cloud storage before I left for Chicago!”
Detective Vance’s eyes narrowed with professional interest. “Are you telling me there might be audio or video footage of the incident?”
May you like
“If the system captured movement or audio in that hallway during the time Daisy described,” Kevin said, his voice trembling with a mix of dread and vindication, “it’s stored securely off-site. Clara doesn’t even know it exists.”
Vance closed his notebook with a sharp snap and pulled out his departmental phone. “Mr. Parker, if that footage exists, it turns a circumstantial child-abuse case into an open-and-shut criminal prosecution. Let’s get those files secured right now.”
