Chapter 9 - A New Dawn for the Estate
The following spring, the gardens of the Marquetti estate were more vibrant than ever. The roses bloomed in brilliant reds and whites, completely washing away the memory of the blood that had once been spilled near their roots.
Inside the sprawling manor, a quiet revolution had taken place. Clara Vance was no longer referred to as the chief of internal security or the former maid — she was a partner in the truest sense, managing the vast commercial empire alongside Adrienne and Vivien with an intelligence and sharpness that commanded absolute respect from every capo and syndicate boss across the eastern seaboard.
Even Elena had softened. On sunny afternoons, the aging matriarch could often be seen sitting on the terrace with Clara, sharing tea and discussing estate management — a sight that would have been completely unimaginable just one year prior.
One crisp morning, as the sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the main study, Adrienne stood behind Clara's desk as she reviewed the quarterly shipping manifests.
"You've been working twelve-hour days for a month straight," Adrienne noted, leaning down so his voice was a warm murmur near her ear. "Every empire needs a strong foundation, Clara, but even the chief architect needs a break."
Clara looked up from her monitor, a genuine smile breaking across her face — the kind of smile she hadn't allowed herself to show in years, back when she was just trying to survive day-to-day.
"Are you offering me a vacation, Mr. Marquetti?" she teased softly, tilting her head.

"I am," Adrienne replied, reaching out to gently take the pen from her fingers. He pulled a pair of first-class plane tickets from his jacket pocket and placed them on the desk. "Destination: anywhere you want that doesn't have docks, ledgers, or syndicate councils."
Clara looked down at the tickets, then up into Adrienne's dark, unwavering eyes. The distance between them vanished, and for the first time, there were no secrets, no guards, and no barriers left standing between their worlds.
