Chapter 7 - The Trap at the Docks

The final showdown came on a rainy Tuesday night at the old municipal dry docks on the edge of the harbor.
The rain poured down in sheets, drumming a relentless beat against the corrugated metal roofs of the warehouses. Inside Warehouse 4, three members of the Falconee council — men who had ruled the underworld with iron fists for thirty years — stood waiting for Adrienne Marquetti.
They thought they had lured him into a trap. They thought the alliance between the Marquettis and the Falconees was on the verge of collapse.
Adrienne walked through the sliding metal doors alone, his hands tucked casually into the pockets of his trench coat. Water dripped from the brim of his hat.
"Adrienne," sneered Donato Moretti, the oldest of the council members, stepping forward from the shadows with a suppressed pistol in his hand. "You're a brave man, coming here without your army."
"I didn't come with an army," Adrienne replied, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "I came to collect."
"Collect what?" Another councilman laughed nervously. "You're finished, boy. The syndicate votes to dissolve the merger tonight. Your ships are impounded, your accounts are locked..."
"Are they?" Adrienne smiled — a cold, humorless smile that didn't reach his eyes.
Suddenly, the overhead lights of the warehouse flickered and died, plunged into total darkness for a split second before the high-intensity emergency floodlights blared to life.
From the catwalks above, a dozen armed enforcers raised their weapons, their laser sights painting red dots across the chests of the council members. And standing right in the center of the upper gantry, holding a military-grade tablet computer, was Clara.
She tapped the screen. Instantly, every computer terminal and backup generator in the warehouse locked down. The encrypted comms devices in the councilmen's pockets began to shriek with a high-pitched feedback loop.
"You've been locked out of your own networks," Clara's voice boomed down from the speakers above, cold and clinical. "Your Swiss bank accounts have just been transferred into a humanitarian relief fund registered under the Marquetti Foundation. You're broke, gentlemen. And you're surrounded."
Donato panicked, raising his gun toward Adrienne. "Kill him!"
May you like
Before Donato could pull the trigger, a silenced shot echoed through the warehouse. Donato’s gun clattered to the concrete as a bullet pierced his shoulder, spinning him around and dropping him to his knees.
Adrienne didn't even flinch. He walked forward, kicking the fallen weapon away, and stood over the cowering traitor.
