The wedding anniversary celebration one year later was unlike the first. There were no hidden guns, no trembling brides, and no bitter mothers-in-law plotting in the shadows.
Instead, the estate was filled with laughter, music, and genuine celebration. The guests — political leaders, international partners, and loyal family members — mingled freely under a canopy of twinkling white lights strung through the ancient oak trees.
Clara stood on the terrace in a stunning, emerald-green silk evening gown that caught the moonlight. The raw, calloused hands she used to scrub marble floors were now adorned with a simple, elegant platinum band set with a single diamond.
Adrienne walked up behind her, wrapping his arms securely around her waist and resting his chin gently on her shoulder.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Marquetti?" he whispered, his breath warm against her neck.
Clara leaned back into his embrace, looking out over the sparkling bay where the boats bobbed peacefully at anchor. She thought back to the frightened girl who had run through the hedge with the smell of gun oil in her nose, terrified and alone, trying to save her mother's life.
"I was just thinking," Clara smiled softly, turning in his arms to face him, "that sometimes, the best things in life come from the most unexpected places."
