Chapter 9 - A New Beginning

A year passed.
With the money from my father’s trust fund—which the court had ordered to be fully released to Sophie as restitution for her medical and psychological care—we decided to make a fresh start. We sold our old suburban house and bought a beautiful, historic home with a wrap-around porch and a massive backyard filled with towering oak trees.
The new house was filled with light. There were no dark corners, no tense silences, and no rules about what could or couldn't be touched. Every room was designed for living, laughing, and being together.
We spent the summer planting a massive garden. Sophie loved digging in the dirt, her laughter echoing through the trees as she chased butterflies. Her faint scars were now just a part of her story—a story of a little girl who was incredibly strong, loved, and protected.
We also received a package in the mail from the executor of my father's estate. It contained the items from the broken memorial frame that had been saved from the wreckage: my father's heavy gold wedding ring and the folded note he had written before he died.
I unfolded the paper with trembling hands.
Take care of Laura and little Sophie. They have my heart.
I sat on the porch swing, tears of peace slipping down my cheeks. Mark walked out, handing me a warm cup of coffee, and sat down beside me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. Sophie was running through the grass, laughing as she chased a golden retriever puppy we had recently adopted.

"He would be so proud of you, Laura," Mark whispered, kissing the top of my head. "You took care of her. You took care of both of them."
"We did it together," I said, leaning into him. "We're finally safe."
