Chapter 4 - The Backlash and the Lies

By the next morning, the reality of what had occurred began to ripple through our extended family. The news that Sophie had been hospitalized with severe burns spread quickly, but the story being told by my mother was vastly different from the truth.
My aunt called me at 8:00 AM, her voice filled with patronizing concern. "Laura, darling, how is Sophie? Diane told us about the terrible accident. She is absolutely devastated! She says you're threatening to call the police over a spilled pot of soup. Surely you know she would never do that on purpose? Family is family, Laura. You can't let a clumsy mistake ruin your mother's life."
"It wasn't an accident, Aunt Clara," I said, my voice deadpan. "I have it on camera."
There was a long silence on the other end. "Well... cameras can be misleading. Perspectives can be skewed. Think of your father's memory, Laura! He would hate to see his family torn apart like this."
"My father would have torn that house down brick by brick if he knew what Diane did to his granddaughter," I spat back, slamming the phone down.
The pressure didn't stop there. Over the next forty-eight hours, I received dozens of text messages from cousins, family friends, and even Vanessa herself.
“Laura, please delete the footage. Mom is having a panic attack. She didn't mean to. You’re destroying this family. Just let us pay for the medical bills and call it even.” – Vanessa
I stared at the screen, a cold numbness settling over me. They didn't care about Sophie's pain. They didn't care about the agonizing screams my daughter uttered every time the nurses had to change her burn dressings. They only cared about protecting the family facade, keeping the ugly, abusive reality of Diane and Vanessa hidden from the world.
Mark sat by Sophie's bedside, holding her uninjured hand as she colored in a coloring book, her brave little face trying so hard to smile through the pain.
"They're panicking," Mark said, looking up from his own phone. "My captain confirmed that the local police department has already reviewed the footage we sent. Detective Miller said it’s one of the most clear-cut cases of child abuse she’s seen in years. They're preparing the warrants."
"Good," I said, sitting down and kissing Sophie's soft cheek. "Let them panic. They thought they could silence us like they always have. But not this time."
Sophie looked up at me, her big eyes searching mine. "Mommy? Is Grandma mad at me?"
My heart shattered into a million pieces. I knelt beside her, gently brushing a stray curl from her face. "No, sweetie. Grandma was very, very wrong. You did nothing wrong. You are the bravest, best girl in the whole world, and Daddy and I are going to make sure nobody ever hurts you again."

"I love you, Mommy," she whispered.
"I love you more than the stars, baby."
