Chapter 5 - The Investigation Opens

Three days after Christmas, the police made their move.

Detective Miller called us to provide an update. The authorities had gone to my mother's house with a search warrant to seize the physical recording device as secondary evidence and to place Diane under arrest.

"How did she react?" Mark asked, putting the call on speaker.

"She tried to resist," Detective Miller replied, a hint of professional satisfaction in her voice. "She claimed we had no right to enter her home, and your sister, Vanessa, tried to block the officers. When we showed them the arrest warrant for felony child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon, your mother went pale. She actually tried to claim the camera was 'hacked' and the footage was fabricated."

I couldn't help but let out a bitter laugh. "Of course she did. She's never taken accountability for a single thing in her entire life."

"Well, the prosecutor isn't buying it," Miller continued. "The video is clear as day. The angle shows her stepping forward, stabilizing her footing, and deliberately aiming the boiling pot at your daughter. Vanessa is also being charged with obstruction of justice and making a false police report, as she initially gave a signed statement claiming Sophie had tripped her grandmother into the soup."

Hearing that Vanessa had gone so far as to write a false statement to frame my six-year-old child made my blood run cold. She was willing to let her own niece take the blame for a horrific burn just to save herself and our mother.

"Thank you, Detective," Mark said. "Please keep us informed of the court dates. We will be there. We want to see this through to the very end."

With the formal charges filed, the news of the arrest hit the local media. A prominent local grandmother arrested for intentionally burning her granddaughter on Christmas Eve was a sensational headline. The protective shield of wealth and social standing that Diane had spent decades building crumbled overnight.

Her country club friends blocked her calls. The charities she volunteered for released statements distancing themselves from her. The shining, perfect world of Diane Bennett was completely collapsing, and for the first time in my life, I felt no guilt for her downfall. She had brought this entirely upon herself.
