Chapter 9 - Healing and Homecoming

Three days later, the snow outside began to melt under a bright, brilliant winter sun.
Mark was finally transferred out of the surgical intensive care unit into a private recovery room on the second floor of St. Jude's. Though he was still sore, bruised, and facing weeks of physical therapy, the color had returned to his cheeks, and his trademark warmth was back in his smile as he sat propped up against a mountain of pillows.
Ruby sat on the edge of his bed, happily chewing on a fresh candy cane while showing him her favorite new plush teddy bear that Marcus had brought her.
Maisie sat in the armchair by the window, her sketchbook open on her lap, coloring a picture of a bright, cheerful house with a freshly painted white door, a warm porch light glowing through the window, and no snow anywhere in sight.
I stood by the window, looking out over the quiet hospital courtyard where the world was moving on, finally free of the shadows that had threatened to consume us.
The door opened softly, and Mark reached out, taking my hand in his, squeezing it gently.

"We're going to be okay, Clara," he whispered, his eyes filled with a profound, unshakable love. "The girls are safe. Your father is facing justice. We're finally free."
I leaned down, resting my head against his shoulder, smiling as I watched Maisie carefully color the front door of her drawing in a bright, clean, honest shade of white.
