Chapter 8 - The Weight of Justice

Before my father could lift a finger or utter another calculated threat, the heavy metal door behind us banged open.

State troopers, led by the county sheriff and backed by federal agents from the regional investigative division, flooded into the archive room, their weapons lowered, their expressions grim and resolute.

"Judge Donald Sterling, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, conspiracy, child endangerment, and obstruction of justice," the sheriff announced, his voice booming off the stone walls as two deputies stepped forward and slapped cold steel cuffs around my father’s wrists.

For the first time in his life, the impenetrable armor cracked. My father’s face drained of color as the reality of his downfall washed over him. He opened his mouth as if to invoke his old judicial privileges, but the sheriff cut him off entirely.

"Don't bother, Judge. We have Tom Miller's full confession, the financial ledgers in that box, and highway camera footage placing your vehicle at the rail siding yesterday evening. Your career is over."

As they escorted him past me toward the exit, my father didn't look at Marcus or the federal agents. He looked directly at me. His lips parted, a final, bitter words forming in the silence: You ruined everything.

"No, Dad," I said steadily, watching him disappear up the stairs. "I finally fixed it."
