Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

The New Year arrived with clear skies and the quiet promise of a fresh beginning.

We didn't return to the house I grew up in—we sold the property through the court receivership, donating every cent of my inheritance to a local children's shelter and a fund for families affected by corporate corruption. Instead, Mark, the girls, and I moved into a modest, sunlit home on the other side of the county, far away from the judicial chambers and hidden rail yards of our past.

On New Year's Day, we stood together on our new front porch. The door was painted a vibrant, welcoming shade of deep blue under the warm glow of a brass porch light.

Ruby laughed, running across the freshly shoveled walkway to catch a stray snowflake, while Maisie walked beside her, holding her little sister's hand tightly, securely, without a single trace of fear in her eyes.

May you like

I looked down at my own hands, then wrapped my arms around Mark as he stepped up beside me, pulling us all close against the crisp winter air.

The past was behind us. The dark night had finally passed. And as the morning sun broke brightly over the horizon, casting its golden light across our new home, I knew that no matter what storms lay ahead, we were finally, truly safe.
