Part 7: A Reckoning in Stone

Before Marcus’s fingers could wrap around the grip of his weapon, Maya moved with blinding speed.

She didn't aim for his chest; she raised her pistol and fired a clean, precise shot straight into the metal flash drive resting on the steel table. The bullet shattered the drive into a shower of plastic and microchips, destroying the stolen syndicate data instantly.

"You little bitch!" Marcus roared, abandoning his holster and drawing his pistol with lightning speed, aiming straight at Maya.

Lorenzo intercepted him mid-draw. With the ferocity of a wild beast, Lorenzo tackled Marcus across the concrete floor, sending both men crashing into a heavy metal filing cabinet with a deafening metallic bang.

Files, binders, and office supplies scattered everywhere. Marcus, despite his leaner build, fought with the desperate strength of a cornered animal, landing a brutal right hook across Lorenzo's jaw that sent blood spraying onto the cold floor.

Marcus scrambled backward, leveling his pistol at Lorenzo’s chest as the mafia boss pushed himself up from the concrete.

"It's over, Lorenzo!" Marcus sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Say hello to Elena for me—"

Crack.

A single, perfectly placed shot echoed through the underground vault.

Marcus froze mid-sentence. His eyes widened in absolute shock as the pistol slipped from his suddenly limp fingers and clattered onto the concrete floor. He staggered backward, clutching his right shoulder where a neat, smoking bullet hole had completely shattered his collarbone.

He collapsed hard onto his knees, gasping for air, clutching his bleeding shoulder with his left hand.

Maya lowered her smoking pistol, her hands steady, her expression completely composed as the acrid smell of gunpowder filled the damp air.

"Never turn your back on a pediatric nurse," Maya said coldly, walking slowly toward him. "We deal with a lot worse than you every single day."

Lorenzo stood up slowly, wiping blood from his lip with the back of his hand. He looked down at Marcus, who was now kneeling in defeat, groaning in agony against the cold stone floor.

The vengeance in Lorenzo's eyes was absolute, but as he looked at the shattered flash drive, then toward the stairs leading up to where his infant son lay sleeping safely in the panic room, something shifted inside him. The cycle of endless underworld bloodshed didn't have to consume everything.

"You won't kill me?" Marcus managed to spit out, blood dripping from his chin. "After what I did to your wife? To your son?"

"Killing you is too easy, Marcus," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping back into its chillingly calm, absolute authority. "You're going to spend the rest of your natural life in a federal supermax prison—without a name, without a cent, and without a single person in the world remembering you ever existed."

Lorenzo signaled toward the doorway, where two elite guards, alerted by the gunshot, finally rushed into the vault with their weapons drawn.

"Take him away," Lorenzo ordered. "Clean up this mess. And notify Agent Miller at the federal task force. Tell him we have a complete confession regarding both corporate espionage and first-degree murder."
