Part 3: The Intercom Warning

The voice echoed softly through the high-end intercom speakers, carrying an eerie, metallic distortion that made the hairs on the back of Maya’s neck stand up.

"Who is this?" Maya demanded, keeping her body positioned defensively between the speaker and Nico’s crib, her grip firm on the heavy pistol Lorenzo had left behind.

"Oh, just someone who appreciates good work," the voice replied, smooth and unhurried. "Too bad you're about to become completely redundant. You think Lorenzo Bolaro is going to protect you? He couldn't even protect his own wife. He couldn't protect his own son from the person sleeping under his very roof."

Maya's mind raced. The voice was disguised, but the cadence was deliberate. It belonged to someone inside the mansion—someone with administrative clearance.

"You're the one who supplied Crane with the neurotoxin," Maya said, keeping her tone icy to hide the pounding of her own heart. "You set him up as the fall guy from the beginning."

"Dr. Crane is a greedy, predictable fool," the voice answered smoothly. "He wanted to pay off his gambling debts in Macau; I gave him the formula and the schedule. But you, Nurse Ellis... you're an uninvited variable. And in this house, variables get eliminated."

A sudden, sharp hiss came from the ventilation grate near the ceiling.

Gas.

Maya didn't hesitate. Four years in a high-risk metropolitan hospital emergency wing had taught her to recognize emergency protocols instantly. She ripped a cotton receiving blanket from the bassinet, soaked it under the bathroom sink tap, and wrapped it tightly around Nico’s face while tucking him deep into the protective carrier shell of the crib. She tied a corner of a damp hand towel around her own mouth and nose, breathing shallowly through the damp fabric.

The sweet, chemical scent of a fast-acting paralytic agent was already bleeding into the room from the air vents.

Click. Whir.

The electronic lock on the heavy nursery door flashed green. Someone was overriding the manual deadbolt from the main security terminal downstairs.

Maya dropped to one knee behind the armchair, raising Lorenzo’s pistol with both hands, steadying her breath. The door swung open smoothly, sliding into the wall with a soft hiss.

Through the haze of the drifting gas, a tall silhouette stepped into the room. The figure wore dark tactical gear, face obscured by a black balaclava, but the build was unmistakable—slender, agile, moving with the practiced grace of someone who didn't throw weight around like the mob enforcers, but struck with lethal precision.

"Give it up, nurse," a voice hissed from behind the mask—the disguised voice dropping slightly, revealing a chillingly calm timbre. "You can't win against an organization that has already won."

"I'm not fighting an organization," Maya muttered through her damp cloth, her finger tightening on the trigger. "I'm just protecting a baby."

She didn't aim for center mass. With cold precision, she fired low, the suppressed pistol coughing a dull thud-thud that punched two holes into the hardwood floor inches from the intruder's boots.

The intruder cursed sharply, diving behind the changing table as return fire cracked through the air, shattering a ceramic lamp and showering the room with porcelain shrapnel.

Before the attacker could line up a counter-shot, heavy, thunderous footsteps echoed down the hallway outside. Lorenzo Bolaro’s voice roared like an enraged animal.

"Open this door, or I'll tear this entire wing down to the studs!"
