Part 4: Echoes in the Dark

The heavy oak door didn't just open—it exploded inward as Lorenzo Bolaro threw his entire muscular weight against it, splintering the reinforced frame and sending chunks of wood flying across the nursery floor.

Behind him, his two remaining elite guards flooded the room with weapons drawn, sweeping their tactical lights across the shadows.

The intruder didn't hesitate. With a burst of speed, the masked figure vaulted over the changing table, shattered the reinforced triple-pane nursery window with the butt of a tactical knife, and dove out into the freezing Chicago night toward the sprawling estate's lower courtyard roof.

"After them!" Lorenzo bellowed, his face dark with fury as he caught sight of the fleeing figure.

"Wait, boss!" one of the guards shouted, pointing toward the crib. "The kid—"

Lorenzo ignored the guard and rushed straight to the bassinet. He dropped to his knees, his massive hands trembling slightly as he scooped up little Nico from the carrier shell. The baby gave a soft, sleepy whimper, wrapped securely in the damp blanket Maya had hastily fashioned, completely safe from the lingering wisps of the paralytic gas.

Lorenzo clutched his son to his chest, his eyes wild with a mixture of raw paternal relief and murderous intent. He looked up at Maya, who was slowly lowering the heavy pistol, her breathing heavy through the damp cloth around her face.

"You saved him," Lorenzo whispered, his voice cracking slightly—the first time the fearsome underworld king had sounded like a broken, human father.

"He's going to be fine, Mr. Bolaro," Maya said, pulling down her makeshift mask and coughing slightly from the residual chemical mist in the air. "The toxin was neutralized in time. But that person on the intercom... they knew the security override codes. That means the saboteur isn't an outside hit squad. It's someone living inside this house."

Lorenzo stood up slowly, cradling Nico with one arm while his free hand clenched into a fist so tight his knuckles turned bone-white. He walked over to Dr. Crane, who was still cowering against the wall, whimpering and clutching his bruised ribs.

"Get up," Lorenzo snarled.

Crane scrambled to his feet, tears streaming down his face. "Mr. Bolaro, I swear to God, I didn't know they were going to try to kill the child! They just told me—they said it was a loyalty test, they said it was just to keep him weak so you would depend on them—"

"Who?" Lorenzo's voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the weight of a thousand executions. "Give me a name, Victor. Or I feed you to the river tonight."

Crane opened his mouth, his eyes darting wildly toward the shattered window, then toward the hallway. "It was... it was..."

Before the name could leave the doctor's lips, a sharp, deafening crack echoed from the courtyard below. A single, silenced sniper round tore through the shattered nursery window, piercing Dr. Crane’s forehead with brutal precision. The doctor's eyes rolled back instantly, and he collapsed to the floor in a lifeless heap, a pool of dark blood spreading across the pristine white carpet.

"Sniper!" the lead guard yelled, diving and pulling Lorenzo and Maya down behind the heavy oak dresser. "Active shooter in the south garden perimeter! Code black!"

Lorenzo shielded Nico’s body completely with his own broad frame, his eyes fixed on the bloody body of the doctor. A cold, dangerous realization settled over his features.

The person inside the mansion hadn't just been betrayed by Crane. They had just eliminated the only witness who could name them.
