Chapter 9 - A New Dawn at the Romano Estate

Spring returned to the Romano estate with a breathtaking explosion of color. The cherry blossoms along the grand drive burst into vibrant shades of pink, and the restored southern gates stood tall and gleaming in the morning sun, symbolizing not a prison fortress, but a true home.
Life in the syndicate had shifted dramatically. While Vincent Romano remained the undisputed king of the underworld, his empire was no longer run out of cold, ruthless isolation. The high-ranking capos and regional lieutenants had quickly learned that stepping into the estate meant stepping into a household where a seven-year-old girl and a giant bulldog held absolute, undisputed veto power over everyone's moods.
It was a Saturday afternoon, and the grand courtyard—once a maximum-security kennel where no one dared tread—was now filled with the sound of laughter.
Sophia was running across the manicured lawn, chasing a red rubber ball, her white dress fluttering in the gentle breeze. And hot on her heels, bounding with clumsy, joyful energy that defied his terrifying reputation, was Diesel. The hundred-and-twenty-pound bulldog chased the ball with unbridled enthusiasm, occasionally letting out happy, muffled barks that startled the estate gardeners into wide-eyed disbelief.
From the shaded veranda above, Vincent leaned against the iron railing, holding a cup of black coffee. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, looking more like a relaxed family man than a feared mafia boss.
Jeppe walked up quietly behind him, placing a fresh stack of shipping manifests on the small patio table.
"Everything is set for the port expansion in Genoa, Boss," Jeppe reported, a slight smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "The council approved the terms without a single objection."
"Good," Vincent said, not taking his eyes off the lawn below, where Sophia had just tumbled playfully into the grass, and Diesel was gently licking her cheek while she giggled uncontrollably.
Jeppe followed his boss's gaze, shaking his head with quiet amusement. "If someone had told me three years ago that the most feared animal in the syndicate would be playing fetch with a little girl, and that you would be standing here smiling like a proud father... I would have had them locked in the basement."
Vincent chuckled, taking a sip of his coffee. "People change, Jeppe. Or rather... they finally wake up."
"She changed everything, didn't she?" Jeppe asked softly.
"She didn't just change things," Vincent replied, turning to look his most trusted guard in the eye, his expression filled with profound, unshakeable certainty. "She saved us. All of us."
Down on the lawn, Sophia looked up toward the veranda, spotted Vincent, and waved enthusiastically with both arms.

"Mr. Romano! Come play!" she shouted across the garden.
Vincent didn't hesitate. For the first time in his life, he didn't care about the manifests, the syndicates, or the heavy burdens of his crown. He set his coffee cup down on the table, smiled warmly, and walked down the steps toward the sunlight, ready to join his family.
