Chapter 7 - The Final Stand in the Foyer

Smoke drifted through the grand hallways of the Romano estate as Vincent and Diesel moved with the cold, calculated efficiency of an elite tactical unit. Room by room, corridor by corridor, Vincent cleared the upper levels, utilizing every corner, shadow, and angle with the ruthless precision that had kept him at the top of the underworld for decades.

And right by his side, moving like a silent shadow of death, was Diesel. The dog didn't bark; he didn't give away their position. He simply hunted alongside his master, a terrifying testament to the bond forged in the quiet east-wing courtyard just weeks prior.

By the time they reached the grand marble foyer on the ground floor, the remaining mercenaries had realized they were walking into a slaughterhouse.

Three men in tactical gear were huddled near the shattered front entrance, their weapons drawn, looking around wildly as their comms hissed with static.

"Where are the others? Alpha team, report!" the leader barked into his shoulder mic, receiving only dead silence in return.

"You're looking for an alpha team that doesn't exist anymore," a cold, calm voice echoed down from the grand staircase.

The three mercenaries snapped their weapons upward, aiming toward the stairs.

Vincent stood on the landing halfway down, his posture perfectly relaxed, his Glock held loosely at his side. But it wasn't just Vincent that made their blood run cold. Standing two steps above him, towering like a mythical beast of war, was Diesel, his low growl filling the cavernous foyer with a sound like grinding tectonic plates.

"Romano," the leader spat, adjusting his grip on his rifle. "Hand over Castellano, and maybe we leave you a clean corpse."

Vincent let out a low, humorless chuckle. He stepped down one stair, his leather soles clicking against the marble.

"You broke into my home," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a tone so icy it seemed to lower the temperature in the room. "You destroyed my property. And worst of all... you disturbed a little girl's bedtime."

The mercenary leader didn't wait. He raised his rifle to fire—

Bang.

Vincent’s shot was instantaneous, striking the leader’s weapon right out of his hands, sending the rifle clattering across the marble floor.

Before the other two mercenaries could react, Diesel launched himself off the staircase. A hundred and twenty pounds of pure muscle and fury hurled through the air, crashing directly into the second mercenary and sending him careening into a marble pillar with bone-cracking force.

The third mercenary panicked, swinging his pistol toward the dog—

Vincent fired twice. The man dropped his weapon, clutching his shoulder as he fell backward against the mahogany console table, shattering porcelain shards across the floor—mirroring the exact spot where Maria had dropped her espresso tray weeks ago.

Within seconds, the foyer fell completely silent. The siege was over. The estate was secure.

Vincent stood amidst the smoke and shattered marble, his breathing steady, his tie slightly askew. He holstered his weapon, walked slowly down the remaining steps, and looked down at the defeated intruders.

"Tie them up and throw them in the southern cells," Vincent ordered into his radio, knowing Jeppe would be listening from the bunker. "And call the clean-up crew. I want this foyer spotless before morning."

"Copy that, Boss," Jeppe’s voice came back over the radio, laced with profound relief and awe. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," Vincent replied, turning his gaze toward the hidden entrance of the east wing. "Just make sure the bunker door is unlocked. It's safe to come out now."
