Chapter 8 - The Shadow over Sicily

We didn't stay in New York.

Within two hours of the attack, Lorenzo’s loyal forces had reclaimed the mansion, eliminating every infiltrator sent by the Moretti syndicate. Marco had fought valiantly at the staircase, taking a bullet to the shoulder to protect the rear exit, proving his loyalty beyond a shadow of a doubt.

When the dust settled, Lorenzo made a decision that surprised the entire underworld.

"We go to Sicily," Lorenzo announced as we boarded his private jet under the cover of darkness. "Antonio Moretti thinks he can strike at my family from the shadows of our ancestral home. He thinks the old country protects him. He is wrong."

I sat in the plush leather seat of the jet, cradling Alexander, who had finally fallen back asleep after the chaotic night. Marco sat across from us, his arm wrapped in heavy bandages, looking humbled and quiet.

"Are you sure about this, Lorenzo?" I asked, looking out the window as the runway lights faded into the night sky. "Bringing us to Sicily... isn't that stepping right into his territory?"

Lorenzo walked over and sat beside me, taking Alexander’s tiny hand in his while wrapping his other arm around my shoulders.

"Sicily isn't Moretti's territory, Hunter," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a deep, gravelly tone laced with centuries of heritage. "The Rossi family built the villages in those mountains. My grandfather started our empire in the valley of Palermo. Moretti is an outsider there. In New York, he fought a war against a business. In Sicily, he will fight a war against a bloodline."

The flight across the Atlantic was long and tense. When we landed at a private airstrip near Palermo, the warm Mediterranean air greeted us, carrying the scent of salt water, olive trees, and ancient stone.

We were driven to a massive stone fortress perched high on a cliff overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea—the Villa Rossi. Unlike the modern, hyper-secured mansion in Long Island, this estate was an ancient castle built from limestone, surrounded by olive groves and guarded by dozens of local men who bowed their heads in deep respect as Lorenzo’s motorcade entered the iron gates.

"Welcome home, Donna Hunter," an old man with weathered skin and kind eyes said, bowing deeply as I stepped out of the car. He was Don Vincenzo, Lorenzo’s uncle and the keeper of the family's ancient estate.

"Thank you, Vincenzo," I said softly, holding Alexander close.

For the next two weeks, the Villa Rossi became our sanctuary and our command center. While I spent time exploring the sun-drenched gardens with Alexander, showing him the orange trees and the blue sea, Lorenzo and Marco worked endlessly in the fortress's ancient stone library.

They mapped out Moretti’s hideouts, intercepted communications, and turned Moretti's own Sicilian allies against him using the immense wealth and legendary respect of the Rossi name.

One evening, as the sun was setting over the sea, painting the sky in shades of crimson and gold, Lorenzo joined me on the stone terrace overlooking the cliff. He looked weary, but the murderous tension that had consumed him since the attack in New York seemed to have lifted.

"It's over," Lorenzo said quietly, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder.

I leaned back against his chest, watching the waves crash against the rocks below. "What do you mean?"

"Moretti was captured an hour ago in a village near Catania," Lorenzo whispered. "His syndicate has completely collapsed. My uncle's men took care of it. There will be no more attacks. No more hiding. No more safe rooms."

I turned around in his arms, looking up into his dark eyes. "Is it really over, Lorenzo? Can we finally just... live?"

Lorenzo reached up, his fingers gently tracing the contour of my face, his thumb brushing over my cheek with an intense tenderness.

May you like

"Yes, my love," Lorenzo whispered softly. "The debt is paid. The blood has dried. From this moment on, the Rossi family belongs to you and Alexander."

He leaned down and kissed me, a long, sweet, passionate kiss under the Sicilian sunset that felt like the true beginning of our lives.
