Chapter 7 - Shadows of Betrayal

A year passed, bringing with it a peace the Rossi family hadn't known in decades. Alexander was now almost two years old, running through the grand hallways of the estate with boundless energy, his loud laughter breathing life into every corner of the mansion.

Lorenzo and I were married six months after our confession, in a quiet, private ceremony on a cliff overlooking the ocean. There were no mafia bosses present, no business deals tied to the vows—just Lorenzo, me, Alexander, and the sunset.

For the first time in my life, I felt truly happy. But in our world, peace is often just the calm before a storm.

It was a rainy Tuesday evening when Marco—Lorenzo's brother—was brought up from the lower estate. For eighteen months, Marco had been living under house arrest in a guarded cottage on the far edge of the Rossi territory. Lorenzo had spared his life at my request, but he had stripped him of all power and authority within the family.

Lorenzo sat behind his massive mahogany desk in the study, his arm wrapped around my waist as I sat beside him. Marco stood across the desk, looking thinner, older, but his eyes carried an urgent, desperate fear.

"Lorenzo," Marco begged, placing his hands on the desk. "You have to listen to me. I know you hate me. I know you think I'm a traitor for swapping the babies that night. But I swear on our mother's grave, I did it to keep the family from falling apart!"

"You lied to me, Marco," Lorenzo said coldly, his voice laced with venom. "You let me believe my real child was dead, and you gave Hunter's baby to a family that was actively trying to kill him."

"I didn't know about the poison!" Marco shouted, tears welling in his eyes. "I swear I didn't know! But that's not why I'm here tonight. Lorenzo... Antonio Moretti isn't dead."

I froze, my body going tense. Lorenzo’s grip on my waist tightened instantly.

"Moretti fled to Sicily," Lorenzo said flatly. "My men are tracking him."

"No!" Marco panicked. "He never left New York! He's been hiding in plain sight, backed by an syndicate from Chicago. They've bought off half your captains, Lorenzo. They know about the wedding. They know Hunter is the biological mother. And they are planning to hit the estate tonight during the storm!"

Lorenzo stood up slowly, his towering frame casting a long shadow across the room. "If this is another one of your games, Marco—"

"It's not a game!" Marco pleaded, falling to his knees. "Look out the window, Lorenzo! Check your perimeter feeds!"

Lorenzo reached for the security console on his desk, but before he could press the button, the lights in the mansion flickered once, twice... and plunged into total darkness.

The emergency generators failed to kick in. The familiar, terrifying sound of heavy gunfire erupted from the front gates—closer and louder than it had ever been during the first attack.

"They cut the power grid!" Lorenzo roared, pulling two handguns from his desk drawer. He tossed one to Marco. "If you want redemption, brother, prove it now!"

Marco caught the weapon, his jaw setting with determination. "I'll hold the main staircase. Get Hunter and Alexander to the tunnel!"

Lorenzo grabbed my hand, dragging me toward the nursery. "Hunter, run!"

Panic surged through my veins like ice water. I didn't think about the luxury, the rings, or the empire. All I thought about was the little boy sleeping in the crib down the hall.

We burst into the nursery just as a flash of lightning illuminated the room. Alexander was standing up in his crib, crying loudly, frightened by the thunder and the gunshots echoing outside.

"I've got him!" I screamed, pulling him out of the crib and holding him tightly against my chest.

Suddenly, the nursery window shattered inward. Glass showered the room as three armed men clad in black tactical gear swung through the window on ropes, landing heavily on the floor.

"Got the girl!" one of them barked into his shoulder mic. "Kill the Don!"

Lorenzo didn't hesitate. He stepped between the gunmen and us, firing blindly into the dark. Two of the men collapsed instantly, but the third tackled Lorenzo to the ground, knocking his gun out of his hand.

"Lorenzo!" I screamed.

The third attacker raised a knife, aiming directly for Lorenzo’s chest. Lorenzo caught the man's wrist, fighting with all his strength, but the attacker had the high ground.

I looked around frantically in the dark. Beside the rocking chair stood a heavy brass lamp I had used during late-night feedings. I didn't hesitate. I picked up the heavy lamp with both hands, rushed forward, and slammed it with all my strength against the side of the attacker's head.

The man groaned and collapsed sideways, unconscious.

Lorenzo pushed the body off himself, breathing heavily. He scrambled to his feet, grabbed his gun from the floor, and pulled me and Alexander into a fierce, breathless hug.

"You saved my life again," Lorenzo panted, kissing my forehead passionately. "Now let's end this war once and for all."
