Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

By sunrise, my life as I knew it had ceased to exist.

I was moved from the tiny, windowless staff quarter in the basement to the master wing of the mansion. The room assigned to me was larger than the entire apartment I used to rent in Queens—adorned with velvet drapes, a king-sized bed, and a door that connected directly to the nursery.

A team of security guards stood stationed outside my door twenty-four hours a day. My maid uniform was burned, replaced by cashmere sweaters, silk robes, and designer clothes I had only ever seen in magazines. But despite the luxury, I knew the truth: I was in a golden cage.

Lorenzo entered my room late that afternoon. He had changed into a dark suit, his tie loosened, looking exhausted but intensely focused. Behind him came two men carrying heavy steel cases, which they placed on the coffee table before bowing and leaving the room.

"How is he?" Lorenzo asked, walking toward the bassinet set up beside my bed.

"He slept for four hours straight," I replied, standing by the window with my arms crossed over my chest. "He took another full feeding an hour ago. His temperature is normal for the first time since I started working here."

Lorenzo looked down at the sleeping infant. For a moment, the cold facade of the mafia Don vanished, replaced by the weary face of a father who had been staring into the abyss of loss for months.

"The doctor came by while you were resting," Lorenzo said calmly. "I had him run a quiet DNA analysis on the blood samples we took last night. I needed absolute certainty."

I turned to face him, my heart catching in my throat. "And?"

Lorenzo pulled a sheet of medical paper from his breast pocket and handed it to me. My eyes scanned the black-and-white print. Probability of Maternity: 99.99%.

Tears pricked my eyes. It was real. I wasn't crazy. The child I had wept over, the phantom weight I had felt in my arms every night, was truly mine.

"What about Sophia?" I asked softly, looking up at him. "If Leo is my son... where is Sophia's baby?"

Lorenzo’s face darkened, a murderous shadow crossing his eyes. "Sophia lost her child three hours before she died on the operating table. The blast tore through the vehicle; the physical trauma was too severe. My brother Marco... he panicked. He knew that in our world, an empire without an heir is an empire ripe for civil war. He paid the attending doctor half a million dollars to swap the death certificates and bring me the only surviving child from the maternity ward that night."

"Your own brother lied to you?" I gasped.

"Marco thought he was saving the family," Lorenzo said coldly. "He thought he was giving me a piece of Sophia to hold onto. He didn't know the infant he stole had been poisoned by the Moretti family's biological agent. He thought the baby was just weak."

"Where is Marco now?"

"He is in the basement," Lorenzo replied, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "He will remain there until I decide what to do with him. In the Rossi family, treason is punishable by death—even if committed out of love."

A chill ran down my spine. This was the man the world feared. A man who could lock his own brother in a dungeon without blinking.

"You can't kill him," I said impulsively.

Lorenzo looked at me, raising an eyebrow. "He stole your child, Hunter. He lied to me for two months while I watched this baby starve."

"He's the reason my son is still alive!" I argued, stepping closer to him. "If Marco hadn't moved Leo to the high-security nursery under your name, he would have died in that underfunded public hospital ward! Marco did a terrible thing, but he kept my baby alive long enough for me to find him."

Lorenzo stared at me, stepping into my personal space until I could smell the scent of cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and rain on his jacket. He towered over me, his presence suffocating yet strangely grounding.

"You are surprisingly merciful for someone who has suffered so much," Lorenzo murmured, his dark eyes locking onto mine. "Or perhaps you are just naive."

"I'm a mother," I said fiercely, refusing to back down. "I care about keeping my son safe. Revenge doesn't feed him. I do."

A slow, rare smirk touched the corner of Lorenzo’s lips. "You have fire, Hunter. Sophia was soft, quiet... she hated this life. You... you stand in front of a monster and tell him how to rule."

"I don't care about your ruling," I snapped, feeling a strange warmth flush through my cheeks at his proximity. "I care about Leo."

"His name isn't Leo anymore," Lorenzo said smoothly, leaning in slightly. "Leo was the name Sophia chose for her child. If he is your son... he needs a name from you."

I blinked, taken aback. "You're letting me name him?"

"He is your blood," Lorenzo said quietly. "And as long as you are under my roof, he is a Rossi. What is his name, Hunter?"

I looked toward the bassinet, my chest swelling with a bitter-sweet emotion. "Alexander," I whispered. "I was going to name him Alexander. Alex for short."

Lorenzo nodded once, a solemn acceptance. "Alexander Rossi. It has strength."

Before I could correct him about the last name, the heavy wooden doors of my suite burst open. A bloodied guard stumbled into the room, collapsing onto his knees.

"Don Rossi!" the guard gasped, clutching his wounded chest. "The perimeter... it's breached! The Moretti family... they know the baby is alive!"
