Chapter 8 - Shadows and Sanctuary

While peace and stability settled deep into the foundations of the Moretti estate, the outside world—the dark, unpredictable underworld of syndicates, rival cartels, and high-stakes power struggles—did not stand still.
Word had eventually leaked through underground channels that Evelyn Crane had been stripped of her illicit assets and expelled from the city. Naturally, some of the lower-level criminal associates who had previously used Evelyn’s laundering network to funnel funds through the estate’s dummy corporations began to take notice. They assumed that with Evelyn gone, the Moretti household was vulnerable, ripe for exploitation by anyone bold enough to test the new management.
It was a chilly Friday evening when the first real external threat materialized.
I was in my private study reviewing international shipping manifests when Vance burst through the door without knocking, his face grim and urgent.
"Boss, we have a situation," Vance said, closing the door firmly behind him. "A group of enforcers connected to the Sterling Syndicate just rolled up to the main gates. They’re demanding entry, claiming we're holding assets that belong to their network."
I didn't flinch. I slowly set my fountain pen down on the desk, leaned back in my leather chair, and locked my fingers together. "The Sterling Syndicate? Victor Sterling must have lost his mind if he thinks he can send thugs to my front door uninvited."
"They know Evelyn was funneling money through your household accounts," Vance explained. "They think they can intimidate us into handing over the recovered assets—or worse, establish a foothold inside the estate to control the service corridors."
A cold, lethal calm washed over me. For years, I had kept my criminal enterprises strictly separated from my private residence. This house was my sanctuary—the one place on earth where peace, family, and safety reigned. Anyone who dared bring violence or extortion to these grounds had gravely underestimated the cost of trespassing.
"Gather the security detail," I instructed quietly, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "Tell them to secure the perimeter doors, especially the staff wing. I want Anna and Lily moved to the secure panic room in the basement immediately."

"Already handled, boss," Vance said. "Norah escorted them down before I even came up."
"Good," I said, a dangerous glint entering my eyes. "Let's go greet our guests."
