Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at Dusk

By late afternoon, the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long, bruised shadows across the stone courtyard of the Moretti estate. Two black SUVs rolled through the wrought-iron gates, crunching over the gravel before coming to a smooth halt near the main entrance.

Vance opened the rear door of the lead vehicle. Evelyn stumbled out, her hair slightly disheveled, her expensive designer coat clutched tightly around her shoulders. She looked around wildly, panic flashing across her face as she realized where she had been brought.

"You can't do this!" Evelyn shrieked as Vance and another guard escorted her up the stone steps and into the grand foyer. "This is kidnapping! I demand to speak to a lawyer!"

"You're standing in a private residence, Evelyn," I said, walking down the sweeping grand staircase with slow, deliberate footsteps. My hands were shoved casually into my trouser pockets, my dark suit tailored to perfection. "And lawyers are for courtrooms. Here, we handle things internally."

Evelyn stopped struggling, though her chest heaved with labored breaths as she stared up at me. "Mr. Moretti... please. I packed my things. I was leaving the city. Just let me go."

"Let you go?" I asked, reaching the bottom of the stairs and stopping a few feet away from her. "After I spent the afternoon reading through five years of your little administrative empire? You didn't just steal from my accounts, Evelyn. You used my name to threaten innocent people, you forged denial stamps on medical accommodations for a four-year-old child, and you systematically ruined the lives and careers of anyone who got in your way."

"I kept this house running!" she yelled defensively, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "While you were busy running syndicates and dealing with international cartels, I managed every detail of this estate! I deserved that money!"

"You deserved a paycheck, which I paid you generously," I replied coldly. "Instead, you chose greed."

I gestured to Vance, who stepped forward holding a heavy leather briefcase and laid it open on the mahogany console table near the door. Inside were neat stacks of cash, international bearer bonds, and a thick folder of legal documents.

"Here is your choice, Evelyn," I said, my voice cutting through the silence of the foyer. "Option one: I turn these financial records and your extortion files over to the federal authorities. You will spend the next ten to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary reflecting on your management style."

Evelyn swallowed hard, her eyes darting to the briefcase. "And... and option two?"

"Option two: You sign every single asset, bank account, and property you acquired using my embezzled funds over to a newly established trust fund managed by Anna and Norah. You leave this city tonight with the clothes on your back, and you never, ever set foot in this state again."

Evelyn stared at me for a long, agonizing moment. She knew the underworld better than she let on; she knew that federal prison was a walk in the park compared to what independent syndicates could do if a debt went unpaid, but she also knew that losing her ill-gotten wealth was a fate worse than death for someone as prideful as her.

"I... I'll sign," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Just... give me the pen."

Norah stepped forward, holding out a silver fountain pen and a pre-printed asset transfer agreement. With shaking fingers, Evelyn scrawled her signature across the dotted line, relinquishing every last cent of her stolen fortune.

"Get her out of my sight," I instructed Vance.

Within minutes, Evelyn was escorted back into the SUV and driven away into the dark night, disappearing from the Moretti estate forever.
