Chapter 6 - A New Dawn in the Kitchen

The next morning, the Moretti estate felt fundamentally different. The heavy, oppressive atmosphere that had hung over the staff quarters for years had vanished, replaced by an unfamiliar sense of lightness and genuine community.

I walked down the hallway toward the kitchen around 7:00 AM, the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee and pancakes drifting through the air. As I pushed open the newly remodeled service entrance—stepping smoothly over the warm, flush oak ramp without a single bump or hitch—I paused in the doorway to take in the scene.

Anna was standing at the stove flipping pancakes, a bright, genuine smile on her face as she chatted with Norah, who sat at the kitchen island reviewing staff schedules on a sleek tablet.

And sitting at the corner of the island, swinging her legs freely, was Lily.

Her white orthopedic brace was still on, but today she wasn't hiding it, nor was she pressing against a wall in fear. Instead, she was coloring in a large picture book with a box of brand-new crayons, humming a soft tune to herself.

As soon as she saw me walk in, Lily stopped humming. She slid off the stool, carefully walking across the smooth wooden flooring with her brace. She didn't stumble. She didn't scrape anything. She walked right up to me and stopped a foot away, holding out a freshly drawn picture of a very lopsided, smiling stick-figure family standing next to a very large house.

"Good morning, Mr. Moretti," Lily said, her voice bright and clear.

I looked down at the drawing, then back up at the little girl. A faint, rare smile touched the corners of my lips. I knelt down to her eye level.

"Good morning, Lily. What's this?" I asked, taking the piece of paper from her small hands.

"It's you," she said, pointing a tiny finger at the tallest stick figure, which sported a very distinct square-shouldered suit drawn in black crayon. "And that's Mommy, and that's Norah, and that's me. And see the floor? It's flat now. It doesn't get scratched anymore."

I looked at the drawing, feeling a warmth settle in my chest that no amount of power, money, or criminal enterprise had ever been able to provide.

"It's a masterpiece, Lily," I said, standing back up and gently placing the drawing on the edge of the counter. "I think we need to frame this and hang it right above the new entrance."

Anna walked over from the stove carrying a small plate piled high with fluffy blueberry pancakes and a cup of black coffee, setting them down at my usual spot at the island.

"You don't have to do that, Anna," I said. "I can get my own coffee."

"It's no trouble at all, Mr. Moretti," Anna said, her eyes shining with deep gratitude. "After everything you've done for us... giving us stability, medical care, and a safe home... serving breakfast is the least I can do."

"You're a salaried administrator now, Anna. Not a servant," I reminded her gently, taking a seat at the counter. "Though I have to admit, your cooking is far superior to any chef I've ever hired."

Norah laughed, tapping her tablet against the counter. "Well, boss, speaking of administration, your schedule today is clear until noon, which gives us plenty of time to review the updated staff restructuring proposals."

"Let's do it," I said, cutting into a pancake. "And Norah? Make sure the new pediatric health insurance policy for Anna and Lily is fully processed by the end of the week. No delays."

"Already done, sir," Norah smiled.
