Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

The next morning, the fragile peace of the Callahan estate was violently shattered.
It was 6:00 AM when the primary security alarms began to wail throughout the mansion—a low, rhythmic electronic shriek that signaled a perimeter breach at the front gates.
Vincent was out of bed before the second alarm cycle finished. He grabbed his holster from the nightstand, strapping it across his chest over a black tactical shirt as he sprinted down the hallway.
In the command center off the main foyer, Mason Reed was already barking orders into an encrypted radio, his face pale under the fluorescent lights.
"Status!" Vincent demanded, bursting into the room.
"We’ve been hit, Boss," Mason said grimly, pointing at the wall of monitors. "Three black SUVs rammed the outer security gate on Lake Shore Drive. At least twelve armed men in tactical gear are moving through the front gardens. They bypassed the external motion sensors using an electronic emitter. It’s the Verhoven crew."
Vincent’s eyes turned to absolute ice. Viktor Verhoven—a ruthless syndicate boss from the eastern suburbs who had been trying to muscle in on Chicago's shipping docks for months. Verhoven knew Vincent's attention had been entirely consumed by the twins' illness, mistaking his withdrawal for weakness.
"They think I'm distracted," Vincent said quietly, his voice dangerously smooth. "They think my house is vulnerable."
"They're heading straight for the main foyer," Mason warned, racking the slide of his submachine gun. "The security detail is engaging them at the courtyard entrance, but they're heavily armed. Boss, the west wing—if they breach the house, the twins' room is directly down the main corridor."
At the mention of the twins, a terrifying surge of adrenaline and fury detonated inside Vincent’s chest.
"Mason, secure the west wing. Take four men and lock the double doors to the hallway. Nobody gets in or out," Vincent ordered, pulling a suppressed pistol from his tactical rig and checking the magazine. "Verhoven wants my empire? I’m going to show him what happens when he steps foot in my house while my children are sleeping."

As Vincent turned to leave the command room, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion exploded inward in a shower of splintered wood and shattered glass. Automatic gunfire chewed through the foyer’s marble pillars, sending white dust and stone chips flying into the air.
The war had come to the nursery door.
