Chapter 9 - The Aftermath and the Vow

The estate security team swept the remaining intruders within minutes, neutralizing the threat before local authorities even had time to log the silent alarm. By midnight, the mansion had returned to its fortress-like quiet, though the air inside the third-floor nursery felt charged with a new, permanent gravity.
Hunter sat in the rocking chair, her adrenaline crashing, tears finally spilling over her cheeks as she held Leo tightly against her chest. The baby, sensing her distress, let out a soft whine, and she automatically shifted to comfort him, feeding him until his breathing evened out into a deep, peaceful sleep.
Lorenzo stood by the window, staring out into the dark, churning Atlantic. He had washed the residue of violence from his hands in the adjoining bathroom, but the shadow of what almost happened lingered in the lines of his face.
He walked over to the rocking chair, kneeling down on one knee so he was eye-level with Hunter.
"Are you hurt?" Lorenzo asked, his voice uncharacteristically gentle.
Hunter shook her head, wiping her tears with the back of her sleeve. "No. I'm just... I'm so tired, Lorenzo. Every time I feel safe, the past comes back to find me."
"It won't find you anymore," Lorenzo said, reaching out to gently touch her cheek with his thumb, wiping away a stray tear. "Tommy and the Moretti remnants are gone. Permanently. You and Leo will never have to look over your shoulder again."
Hunter looked down into Lorenzo's dark, intense eyes. For the first time since she had arrived at the mansion, she saw past the mafia boss, past the billionaire, past the armor of grief and vengeance. She saw a man who had lost everything, just like her, and had found a reason to live again in the warmth of her arms.
"Why do you keep protecting us?" Hunter whispered.
May you like
"Because," Lorenzo answered, his hand sliding from her cheek to rest gently over Leo's small back, uniting them both in a single touch, "you saved my son when I was powerless to do it. You brought the light back into this dead house, Hunter. And I am not a man who lets his light go."
Hunter's heart swelled, the heavy ache in her chest finally easing as she leaned forward, resting her forehead gently against Lorenzo's shoulder.
