Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Marble Halls

Life inside the Rossi estate settled into an eccentric, tightly controlled routine. To the outside world, Lorenzo Rossi was still the ruthless syndicate boss who ruled the eastern seaboard with an iron fist. But inside the mansion, the man who had frozen the underworld was slowly thawing under the influence of midnight feedings and soft baby coos.

Word spread quickly among the household staff. Mrs. Gable, the stern head housekeeper who had run the mansion with military precision for thirty years, began leaving extra plates of comfort food outside Hunter's new second-floor suite—braised short ribs, warm apple tarts, and iron-rich teas designed for nursing mothers.

One afternoon, while Hunter was walking in the enclosed courtyard gardens behind the mansion, pushing a custom Italian stroller with Leo sleeping inside, Mrs. Gable approached her with a bundle of soft cashmere blankets.

"You're handling him well, child," Mrs. Gable said, her stern face softening into a rare smile as she tucked the blanket around Leo's legs.

"Thank you, Mrs. Gable," Hunter replied, adjusting her sunhat. "It's... it's a lot, but he's a good baby."

"He's a Rossi," the housekeeper said quietly, looking around to ensure the guards were out of earshot. "And the boss... well, Mr. Rossi hasn't looked at anyone the way he looks at you and that boy since his wife passed. Be careful, Hunter. This house has ghosts in every corner. Lorenzo carries a weight that could crush a mountain."

"I'm not looking to replace anyone," Hunter said honestly. "I'm just a mother whose arms were empty, and a boy who needed them full."

Mrs. Gable patted Hunter's arm gently. "Just remember that monsters don't usually know how to love gently. If he starts caring for you too much, the men who hate him will try to use you to break him."

That evening, as dusk fell over the cliffs, Hunter sat by the nursery window watching the waves crash against the rocks below. The warning echoed in her mind. She looked at her reflection in the dark glass—she was no longer just a terrified maid hiding from her past; she was part of the inner machinery of the Rossi empire.

The door opened silently, and Lorenzo walked in. He carried a small velvet box in his hand. He didn't say anything at first, walking over to the crib to check on Leo before turning his dark, piercing gaze onto Hunter.

"Mrs. Gable tells me you were walking in the gardens today," Lorenzo said.

"Yes. The fresh air was nice." Hunter stood up, stretching her sore back.

Lorenzo set the velvet box on the side table and pushed it toward her. "Open it."

Hunter raised an eyebrow suspiciously, walking over and lifting the lid. Inside sat a sleek, encrypted smartphone, pre-loaded with only three contacts: Lorenzo Rossi, Mrs. Gable, and the estate security desk. Beneath it was a black platinum credit card with her name embossed in silver.

"What is this?" she asked.

"Your phone. Your lifeline," Lorenzo said plainly. "If you need anything—books, clothes, toys for the boy, anything—you order it. And the phone... if anyone ever approaches you, if you ever feel unsafe in this house for even one second, you press speed dial one. That's my direct line."

Hunter looked from the box up to Lorenzo’s face. In the dim light of the nursery, the harsh lines of the mafia boss seemed to soften, revealing the deeply scarred, fiercely protective father underneath.

"Thank you, Lorenzo," she said softly, using his first name for the very first time.

Lorenzo’s breath hitched slightly, a microscopic reaction, before he nodded and turned toward the door. "Get some rest, Hunter. Tomorrow, we start teaching him how to take a bottle with pumped milk. You won't be chained to this chair forever."
