Chapter 9 - Justice Served
In November, the trial of Denise Carter took place at the County Courthouse. The courtroom was packed with community members, journalists, and officers who had worked on the case. Andrew sat in the front row, holding Officer Natalie's hand on one side and his attorney on the other. Ashley was kept safely away from the proceedings, staying with a certified child counselor in a comfortable room nearby.
When Denise was brought into the courtroom dressed in orange jail attire, she refused to look at Andrew. Her defense attorney tried to argue for diminished capacity, but the evidence presented by DA Marcus Vance was undeniable. The toxicological reports, the erased note on the shopping list, the tire marks at the ravine, and the wire transfers proving her financial desperation painted a picture of pure, deliberate malice.
The jury took less than two hours to reach a unanimous verdict.
"On count one, attempted murder in the first degree: Guilty. On count two, child endangerment and poisoning: Guilty. On count three, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon: Guilty."
The judge looked down sternly at Denise from the bench. "Denise Carter, your actions demonstrated a profound lack of humanity and an astonishing cruelty toward an innocent child and her grieving father. You betrayed the sacred trust of family for monetary gain. I sentence you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."

As the bailiffs led Denise away in handcuffs, a collective sigh of relief filled the courtroom. Andrew stood up, took a deep breath, and walked out into the hallway where sunlight was streaming through the high stained-glass windows.
He pulled Natalie and Eric into a tight group hug. "Thank you for giving us our lives back," Andrew whispered, his voice steady and full of peace.
