Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Deceit

With Denise secured in the back of a secondary patrol vehicle, emergency rescue crews lowered ropes and heavy hydraulic tools down into the ravine. Natalie remained down in the mud, holding Andrew’s hand as firefighters worked tirelessly with the "Jaws of Life" to cut away the twisted steel frame of the blue pickup truck.

"Hang in there, Andrew," Natalie urged softly, wiping rain and grime from the man's forehead. "You're going to see Ashley soon."

"The soup..." Andrew managed to choke out through cracked, blood-stained lips. "The soup... in the fridge... she... poisoned it..."

Natalie’s heart sank. She recalled the container of cloudy soup sitting inside the refrigerator on Cedar Street—the soup Ashley had said smelled funny and had only eaten a tiny bit of. Suddenly, Ashley’s swollen abdomen and stomach pain made horrific sense. Denise hadn't just forced Andrew off the road; she had spiked the food in Andrew’s home before he left, ensuring that even if Ashley survived alone, she wouldn't be able to speak.

"I'll have the lab test it immediately," Natalie promised, gripping his hand tighter. "The doctors at the hospital will know exactly how to treat her now."

After forty minutes of agonizing precision, firefighters successfully freed Andrew from the wreckage. He was strapped onto a spinal board and hoisted up the cliff to an awaiting ambulance. Natalie rode in the front passenger seat, keeping radio communication open with St. Jude’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

"PICU, this is Officer Brooks," she reported rapidly. "Patient Ashley Hale needs an immediate toxicology screen for organophosphates or heavy chemical contamination. The suspect altered food items in her home!"

On the other end of the radio, the lead pediatrician responded instantly: "Understood, Officer. We are prepping targeted anti-toxin therapies and gastric flushing right now. Good work."

As the ambulance sped toward the medical center with sirens blaring through the dying storm, Natalie looked back at Andrew through the interior window. He was drifting in and out of consciousness, his oxygen mask fogging with every faint breath, but his lips moved softly, repeating the same word over and over: "Ashley... Ashley..."
