Chapter 8 - The Verdict and the Fallout
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
When the foreperson stood to read the verdict, the atmosphere in the courtroom was electric.
Guilty on all counts of aggravated domestic assault and battery.
Guilty of kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment.
Guilty of financial fraud, coercion, and identity theft.
The judge didn't hold back during sentencing. Margaret, citing her advanced age, received a sentence of fifteen years without the possibility of parole for orchestrating the brutal assault and leading the campaign of coercive control. Andrew received twelve years in a federal penitentiary for his active participation in kidnapping, assault, and financial crimes. Harold, who had played a more passive role but remained complicit through silence, received three years of probation and community service, alongside mandatory counseling and a total alienation from any family assets.

As the bailiffs led Andrew and Margaret away in heavy steel handcuffs, Margaret let out a piercing shriek of disbelief, thrashing against the officers until the heavy wooden doors swung shut.
Andrew looked back at me one last time, his expression a pathetic mask of betrayal and regret. But I didn't feel anger. I felt nothing at all—just the profound, clean peace of closure.
