Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

Recovery was a brutal physical battle. For weeks, I underwent grueling physical therapy to teach my left leg how to bear weight again. But emotional healing proved even more demanding.
My parents, who had been systematically isolated from me through fabricated emails and blocked phone numbers sent by Andrew, flew in from Ohio the moment they heard the news. When my mother walked into my hospital room and saw me in a wheelchair, she broke down, holding me so tightly I thought my ribs would crack.
“We thought you hated us,” my mother sobbed. “Andrew told us you moved to Europe for a career opportunity and changed your number.”
“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I was so ashamed. I thought I could handle them.”
While I healed, the legal machinery turned relentlessly against my abusers. Andrew hired a high-priced defense attorney who tried to paint me as an unstable, self-harming wife prone to hysterical episodes. They submitted fabricated medical logs written by Margaret—who had once worked as a nurse's aide—claiming I had a history of falls.
However, they hadn't counted on Detective Vance or my corporate attorney friend, whose firm specialized in financial crimes and coercive control litigation.

Furthermore, a digital forensics team extracted deleted text messages from Andrew’s phone—messages where he and Margaret explicitly discussed breaking my spirit, isolating me from my support system, and keeping me financially dependent so I could never escape.
The trial date was set for early autumn.
