Chapter 4 - The Unexpected Ally

At 6:30 AM, the first joggers appeared on the multi-use trail running parallel to the highway.
Hiding behind a thicket of bushes, I waited for an approachable face. When an older woman in a bright yellow running jacket jogged past, slowing her pace to catch her breath, I used a sturdy branch as a crutch and hoisted myself up, stumbling out onto the gravel path.
“Ma’am... please,” I choked out, my voice raspy and broken.
The woman gasped, stepping back, but when she saw my swollen, deformed leg, the color drained from her face. She dropped her phone and rushed forward, catching me before I collapsed.
“Oh, my god! What happened to you?” she cried, steadying me. “My name is Clara. I live in the Westridge estate.”
“My name is Emily,” I wept, tears finally breaking free. “My husband and his parents... they broke my leg. They locked me in the house. Please, you have to help me call the police. Not local patrol—they know everyone on the force. We need state troopers or the FBI.”
Clara didn’t hesitate. She whipped out her phone, her hands trembling as she dialed 911, and then placed a second call to her daughter, a high-ranking corporate attorney in downtown Charlotte.
Within twenty minutes, the haunting sound of police sirens wailed through the morning air. Two unmarked state trooper cars and an ambulance screeched to a halt beside the trail head. As paramedics rushed toward me with a stretcher, a tall, stern-looking female detective stepped out of the lead cruiser, flashing a badge that read Detective Sarah Vance, NC State Bureau of Investigation.

“Mrs. Vance,” I whispered as they strapped me onto the gurney. “My husband thinks he owns me. You need to raid the house before they destroy my identification and financial records.”
Detective Vance looked down at me with fierce, unwavering eyes. “Don't worry, Emily. Your nightmare is over. Mine is just beginning for them.”
