Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Following the finalization of the divorce and the conclusion of the trial, I sold our old house. It held too many ghosts. I took the money and moved Lily away from the prying eyes of the media, settling into a quiet, beautiful coastal town in Oregon.

Our new home was a charming cottage painted the color of the sea, complete with a wild rose garden and a private wooden walkway that led directly onto the sandy beach.

The first few months were a challenge. Lily frequently woke up crying from nightmares. Every single time, I would wrap my arms around her, rocking her gently in the dark and whispering, "I've got you, Lily. We're safe now. Nobody can ever hurt us again."

Together, we attended family therapy. Slowly, I began to rebuild my career, taking on freelance graphic design work from a bright, sunlit home office that allowed me to always be there when Lily got home from school.

Marcus flew out to visit us nearly every weekend. He helped me fix up the cottage, taught Lily how to fly kites on the windy beach, and filled our home with the booming, honest laughter we desperately needed. His presence was a constant reminder that there were still good, honorable men in the world who loved us unconditionally.

Time proved to be the ultimate healer. Smile by smile, Lily’s laughter returned. Her cheeks grew rosy from the crisp sea air, and she stopped flinching at sudden noises.
