Chapter 6 - Confrontation at the Crossroads

That night, a violent storm rolled over the valley. The old wooden cabin groaned as the wind lashed against the shutters. Inside, it was pitch black, illuminated only by occasional flashes of lightning that cast long, eerie shadows across the room.
Tactical police officers were heavily embedded in the surrounding woods and hidden beneath the floorboards in the cellar. Marcus stood right next to me in the shadows, his hand resting on his licensed firearm. Lily was miles away, safe at the central precinct under protective custody.
11:45 PM.
The low rumble of an engine approached, its headlights suddenly cutting through the heavy rain. The black SUV came to a halt in the muddy driveway. This time, two men stepped out into the storm.
It was the hitman—and Derek.
Derek wore the expensive jacket I had ironed for him just the night before. His face held no worry for his family; instead, it was contorted with malice. In his hand, he carried a heavy plastic jerrycan. He didn't just want us dead; he wanted to burn the cabin to the ground to erase all forensic evidence, framing it as a tragic electrical fire during a storm.
"Are you sure they're in there?" Derek’s voice cut through the downpour.
"Her phone pinged here before the battery died. They don't have a car; they're trapped," the hitman replied.
Standing behind the door, I heard every word. The last remaining pieces of my heart shattered into dust, leaving behind a profound, icy emptiness. The love, the memories, the ten years of marriage... all of it had been a lie.

Derek kicked the front door open, putting on his final performance. "Clara! Lily! Are you in here? It's me, I'm here to save you!"
I stepped out from the shadows, standing directly in the center of the room, facing him.
