Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

The FBI raid on Vance Development was the largest federal operation the county had seen in fifty years.

Richard Vance’s illusion of absolute power shattered in a matter of hours. The federal ledger Sarah had uploaded provided undeniable proof of a ten-year embezzlement scheme totaling over fourteen million dollars. Because the funds were federal grants, the local district attorney and Richard's judge brother were completely stripped of jurisdiction. Both were placed under federal investigation for obstruction of justice within a week.

Steven Vance was arrested at the Country Club, right in the middle of the dance floor, in front of the entire student body. The pink tape recorder’s audio, combined with the forensic photos of Kayla’s bruises, resulted in multiple federal charges of attempted felony assault, domestic abuse, and conspiracy.

Arthur spent three terrifying days in federal custody, but because he had come forward as a cooperating witness and provided the necessary encryption keys to dismantle the Vance financial empire, the Department of Justice offered him full immunity in exchange for his testimony. He walked out of the federal courthouse a free man, his tears drying in the sunlight as his family wrapped him in a massive embrace.

The town changed after that night. The culture of fear and silence that the Vance family had cultivated for decades evaporated.

Two weeks after the raid, the senior class organized an alternative event—not a prom, but a celebration of survival and community strength. They called it "The Freedom Ball."

Kayla attended. She didn't wear a wig. She didn't wear a scarf. She wore her beautiful emerald-green gown, her shaved head held high, looking radiant, powerful, and utterly incomparable. When she walked into the hall, the entire room didn't whisper or pity her; they stood up and gave her a roaring, five-minute standing ovation. She wasn't voted Prom Queen by a corrupt popularity contest; she was chosen by her peers as a symbol of courage.

Reese stood by her side, wearing her unicorn pajamas underneath a fancy blazer, still holding her pink tape recorder like a badge of honor.
