Chapter 3 - The Broken Mirror

The aftermath of Steven's departure was not a explosion, but a slow, agonizing bleed.

Kayla crawled out of the bathroom and collapsed onto her bedroom floor, burying her face in the ruined golden locks that she had spent years growing out. The prom dress, a breathtaking emerald-green gown she had saved up for by working weekends at the local library, hung on the closet door like a mocking ghost.

Arthur sat on the edge of the bed, his head buried in his hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, heavy tears. The weight of his compromise—made, ironically, out of a desperate desire to provide for his family—had finally crushed him.

I knelt beside Reese, who was still holding the pink tape recorder against her chest like a shield. "Reese," I whispered, pulling her into my arms. "How did you find out? How did you record that?"

Reese looked at her sister, her eyes filled with an old, solemn wisdom that no eight-year-old should possess. "I hid under the living room couch on Thursday night," she said softly. "Steven came over late. Kayla was upstairs changing. He was on the phone with his friend, Bryce. He was laughing about how he was going to 'tame' Kayla at the afterparty. He said he had the pills in his car. He said once she was pregnant, she wouldn't be able to go to Stanford, and she’d have to stay here and be his forever."

A cold sweat broke out across my neck. If Reese hadn't intervened... if she hadn't taken that razor to Kayla's head this morning... Kayla would have gotten into that limo tonight. She would have taken a drink. Her life would have been stolen from her before the sun came up tomorrow.

"You saved her," I whispered, kissing the top of Reese's head. "You saved your sister."

Kayla lifted her head, her face blotchy and swollen from crying. She looked at Reese, then down at the hair on the carpet. The initial shock and fury were beginning to clear, replaced by a devastating realization. She looked at her dad.

"Is it true, Dad?" Kayla asked, her voice barely audible. "Will he really send you to jail if we tell anyone?"

Arthur couldn't look her in the eye. "Richard Vance has the money to buy whatever truth he wants, Kayla. The documents he made me sign... they look terrible. On paper, it looks like I stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from the firm's clients. I did it because... because they were threatening to downsize my department, and I couldn't lose our healthcare. I couldn't risk not paying for your school. I thought I was being smart. I thought I was playing their game." He let out a ragged sob. "I'm so sorry. I brought a wolf into our house, and I let him eat our children."

I stood up, walking over to my husband and placing a firm hand on his shoulder. "We are not giving up, Arthur. And we are not letting that boy destroy our daughters. We have the tape. We have the photos of the bruises."

"It won't be enough against the Vances in a local court, Elena," Arthur said hopelessly. "Richard’s brother is the presiding judge in this district. Any warrant, any restraining order we file... it will go straight to his desk and vanish. And then the fraud charges against me will magically appear."

Kayla stood up slowly. She walked over to the full-length mirror on her closet door. For a long, agonizing minute, she just stared at her reflection. The beautiful, popular high school senior was gone. In her place stood a girl with a jagged, unevenly shaved scalp, looking vulnerable, exposed, and utterly changed.

She reached out and touched the glass, tracing the line of her own jaw. Then, she did something none of us expected.

She stopped crying.

Her shoulders squared. The fear in her eyes hardened into something sharp, bright, and dangerous.

"He thinks he won because he took my hair," Kayla said, her voice dropping an octave, steady and resonant. "He thinks he won because he has power over Dad. But he forgot one thing." She turned around to face us, her bald head held high. "He forgot that I’m not going to that prom tonight. Which means he has to walk into that gym completely alone. And everyone is going to ask where I am."
