Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Vance Empire

The silence that followed Steven’s threat didn’t just occupy the room; it suffocated it. My husband, Arthur, stood frozen, his eyes locked onto Steven’s smug, unbothered grin. The man who had spent twenty years protecting this family looked suddenly fragile, stripped of his authority in his own home.

"What do you mean by that, Steven?" I demanded, my voice trembling but sharp as I kept my phone aimed squarely at his face. The little red recording dot blinked steadily—a tiny sentinel of truth in a room collapsing under the weight of lies. "Speak into the camera. Tell me exactly what you think you have over my husband."

Steven didn't flinch. He adjusted the collar of his pristine hoodie, looking entirely at ease despite the fact that a terrified, bald teenager was sobbing into the bathroom floor behind him. "Ask him, Mrs. Adams," Steven said softly, his tone dripping with patronizing pity. "Ask your husband about the audit at the firm. Ask him about the 'misallocated' municipal funds that mysteriously found their way into your family's savings account right before Kayla’s college tuition was due."

My heart stopped. I turned my head slowly toward Arthur. His silence was the loudest confirmation I had ever heard.

"Arthur?" The word slipped out of me, hollow and frightened.

"It’s not what it looks like, Elena," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking. He wouldn't look at me. He was looking at the floor, at the stray strands of Kayla’s golden hair scattered across the tile. "Richard Vance... Steven’s dad... he set the whole thing up. He offered it as a bonus, a private investment structure. I didn't know it was illegal until last month. When I tried to back out, Richard told me it was too late. He said if I ever went to the authorities, he’d ensure I spent the next fifteen years in federal prison."

Steven chuckled, a chillingly casual sound. "My dad owns the firm, Mr. Adams. He owns the chief of police. He practically owns this entire county. You think a little pink toy recorder and a cell phone video are going to ruin my life? If you call the cops, my dad will have the fraud charges filed against you before the handcuffs can even click on my wrists. Kayla won't be going to college. She’ll be visiting her dad through a plexiglass window."

He stepped forward, completely ignoring Arthur now, and looked down at Kayla. "So here’s what’s going to happen. Kayla, you’re going to get up. You’re going to put on a nice scarf or a wig, and you’re going to come to prom with me. We’re going to take our pictures, we're going to win King and Queen, and then we're going to forget this little... tantrum ever happened. Because if you don’t, your family loses everything by Monday morning."

"You're a monster," Kayla choked out, her voice raw, her hands clutching her bare scalp.

"I'm a Vance, baby," Steven corrected smoothly, reaching out to touch her chin. "We just know how to win."

Before his fingers could graze her skin, a small, fierce blur slammed into his midsection. It was Reese. She didn't cry, she didn't scream; she just used all forty-five pounds of her eight-year-old body to push him away from her sister. Steven stumbled back, his eyes flashing with sudden, ugly rage. He raised a hand, instinctively bringing it back to strike the child.

"Touch her," Arthur roared, a sudden, primal fire re-igniting in his eyes as he stepped between Steven and Reese, "and I swear to God, Vance, the police will be the least of your problems. I will end you myself."

May you like

Steven paused, his hand hovering in the air. He looked at Arthur's clenched fists, then at my blinking phone camera, and finally back at the little pink tape recorder still gripped tightly in Reese’s hand. Slowly, the arrogant smirk returned to his face.

"Fine," Steven said, taking a step backward into the hallway. "Have it your way. Enjoy prom night at home, Kayla. You look ridiculous anyway." He turned on his heel and walked down the stairs, his footsteps echoing with terrifying certainty. A moment later, the heavy front door slammed shut, rattling the windows of our home.
