Chapter 8 - The Recovery

Three days later, the morning sun broke through the tall windows of Clara's private recovery room, bathing the white sheets in warm, golden light.

The poison had cleared her system, thanks to the swift administration of the antitoxin and Dr. Sterling's team. Her face had regained its warm, natural color, though dark circles still lingered under her soft green eyes.

"Ethan?" she called softly, turning her head on the pillow.

I stood up instantly from the armchair where I'd been sleeping, setting down a lukewarm cup of coffee. "I'm right here, sweetie."

Clara reached out, her hand warm and strong now. I squeezed it tightly, bringing her knuckles to my lips.

"Lily?" she asked, her voice raspy.

"She's down in the cafeteria with the hospital counselor," I smiled gently. "She's been a little rock star, Clara. You wouldn't believe how brave she was."

Clara's eyes filled with tears as memories of that horrifying morning began to settle into place. "Marlene... she took father's ledgers from my bag. She gave me something in my water..."

"I know," I said quietly, leaning down to stroke her cheek. "Detective Miller found everything. They searched Marlene's estate with a warrant two days ago. They found Arthur's real will, the hidden accounts, and a greenhouse full of digitized plant extractions matching the poison in your blood."

Clara let out a long, trembling breath, as if a weight she had carried her entire life was finally lifted off her shoulders. "It's over?"

"It's over," I affirmed. "The District Attorney filed formal charges yesterday. Bail was denied completely. She's going to spend the rest of her life behind bars, Clara. She will never touch you or Lily again."

The door pushed open quietly, and Lily peeked her head inside, holding a small paper cup full of orange juice and a bright red balloon. Seeing her mother awake and sitting up, her eyes lit up like stars.

"Mommy!" she squealed, running across the room.

Clara sat up, opening her arms wide. Lily scrambled up onto the mattress, wrapping her arms tightly around her mother's neck. Clara buried her face in Lily's hair, crying tears of overwhelming relief and joy.

I sat on the edge of the bed, wrapping my arms around both of them, shielding them from the world outside. For the first time in years, our family was completely, truly safe.
