Chapter 7 - The Arrest

Before Marlene could touch the IV tube, Detective Miller and three officers burst from behind the partition, guns drawn, flashlights flooding the room with blinding white light.

"Police! Drop the bottle! Hands behind your head now!" Miller shouted.

Marlene shrieked in shock, dropping the glass bottle onto the linoleum floor. It shattered into a dozen glittering pieces, pooling a clear, deadly liquid across the tiles. She stumbled backward, bumping against the metal tray table, her face draining of all color.

"Ethan!" she gasped, looking around frantically like a trapped animal. "You... you trapped me!"

"Get her down!" Miller commanded.

Two officers moved in quickly, grabbing Marlene's arms and forcing her down against the edge of the bed frame. She kicked and screamed, her silver hair flying wild, looking every bit the monster she had tried so hard to hide beneath expensive silk and society titles.

"You can't touch me!" she screamed, her voice shrill and cracked. "Do you know who I am?! I am Marlene Whitaker! I will have all your badges for this! Ethan, you pathetic coward! You're nothing without my money! Nothing!"

Officer Ramirez pulled her hands behind her back and snapped the heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

"Marlene Whitaker," Miller read calmly from a card in his hand, "you are under arrest for attempted murder, child endangerment, tampering with evidence, and suspected first-degree murder in the death of Arthur Whitaker. You have the right to remain silent..."

I stepped away from her, turning my back entirely on her screams as the officers dragged her out into the hallway. The loud, chaotic noise of her resistance faded down the corridor until the heavy double doors of the unit clicked shut, leaving only the steady, rhythmic pulse of Clara's heart monitor.

I collapsed into the chair beside Clara and took her hand again.

A moment later, the side door opened, and Lily ran into the room. She threw her arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder.

"She's gone, Dad," Lily sobbed, her little body trembling. "She's really gone."

"She's gone, baby," I whispered back, pressing a kiss into her hair. "She's never coming back."

On the bed, Clara's fingers twitched against mine. A small, ragged breath escaped her lips, and slowly, agonizingly, her eyes fluttered open.
