Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The heavy heels of Marlene's designer shoes clicked softly against the linoleum floor. She stepped into the darkened room, her silken blue coat draped over her shoulders, her silver hair immaculately brushed back into place.

"Ethan," she whispered, her voice laced with manufactured tragedy. "Oh, my poor boy..."

I didn't lift my head. I kept my face hidden against Clara's arm. "You shouldn't be here, Marlene."

"I had to come," she said, stepping closer to the bedside. The smell of her expensive perfume filled the air, sickeningly sweet, masking the faint metallic scent of hospital equipment. "I know you were angry with me at the house. You were confused. Lily was confused. But I'm Clara's mother. My place is here."

"She almost died," I choked out, forcing my voice to break convincingly. "The doctors... they say her heart is failing. They don't know why."

Marlene reached out, her gloved hand resting lightly on Clara's blanket. "It's a mercy, Ethan. Clara was suffering. She's been unhappy for years. You saw how unstable she was getting."

"She was fine yesterday!" I yelled softly, turning my face toward her, letting her see the red, tear-filled rage in my eyes. "She loved us! She loved Lily!"

"She was weak!" Marlene snapped, her soft facade slipping for a brief second before she caught herself. She took a step closer to the IV pole hanging beside Clara's head. "She was weak, just like her father. Always questioning me. Always digging into things that didn't concern her. I built an empire for this family, Ethan! I kept the Whitaker name clean for thirty years! And she was going to throw it all away because of some stupid papers she found in an old desk!"

"Arthur's ledgers," I said, staring directly into her cold eyes.

Marlene froze. Her eyes flicked toward me, calculating, razor-sharp. "So she told you."

"She didn't have to," I said. "Lily saw everything this morning."

Marlene gave a dark, bitter laugh that echoed unnaturally against the glass windows. "A nine-year-old child's word against mine? Do you really think anyone will believe her, Ethan? I own half the judges in this county. I fund the police sports league. By tomorrow morning, Clara will be gone, you'll be investigated for neglect, and I will take custody of Lily to ensure she's raised... properly."

She reached inside her blue coat pocket and pulled out a small, amber glass bottle with a rubber dropper tip.

"What is that?" I demanded, standing up slowly.

"It's over, Ethan," Marlene whispered, reaching for the rubber port on Clara's IV line. "A secondary dose will make it look like a tragic cardiac arrest during intake. The hospital will blame their own equipment. You can go back to your lawn, and I will fix this family."

"You're insane," I said.

"I am protective!" she hissed, unscrewing the cap. "I do what needs to be done!"

"That's all we needed to hear," a voice boomed from behind the curtain.
