Chapter 8 - The Clean Break

Six months later.

The news headline on the front page of the Chicago Tribune read: "DELUCA ENTERPRISES DISSOLVES HOLDINGS; MOB SYNDICATES CRUMBLED BY FEDERAL INVESTIGATION."

With Julian’s confession and the evidence Damian provided, the Moretti crime family was systematically dismantled by federal prosecutors. Damian had turned over full cooperation in exchange for complete immunity and a clean break from his past life.

He sold his high-security Chicago estate, closing that chapter forever.

Instead, Damian purchased a sprawling, sunlit horse ranch in the rolling hills of Ojai, California—a place known for its pristine air, quiet countryside, and world-class developmental therapy centers.

On a bright afternoon, Natalie stood on the porch of the Mediterranean-style ranch house, watching Ava ride a gentle quarter horse guided by a specialized pediatric therapist. Ava was beaming, calling out joyfully, "Look at me, Natalie! I'm flying!"

Natalie waved back, a brilliant smile illuminating her face.

Hands gently slid around Natalie’s waist from behind. Damian pulled her close, resting his chin on her shoulder, inhaling the sweet scent of her hair.

"She hasn't had a single sensory overload incident in two months," Damian whispered, kissing Natalie’s neck.

"She’s thriving," Natalie replied softly, leaning back into his warm chest. "She feels safe, Damian. We all do."

"That’s because of you," he said gently, turning her around in his arms.

In the past six months, the hard, intimidating edges of Damian DeLuca had completely softened. The cold, calculating stare that used to strike terror into corporate executives and mobsters alike was gone, replaced by a warm, relaxed happiness.

"I have a surprise for you," Damian said, pulling a leather folder from his jacket pocket.

Natalie raised an eyebrow. "Another advance on my salary?" she teased.

Damian laughed—a rich, genuine sound. "Not quite."

He opened the folder. Inside were official land deeds and legal incorporation documents for the "Carter-DeLuca Foundation for Neurodivergent Youth."

Natalie blinked, staring at the paper. "What is this?"

"We bought forty acres adjacent to this ranch," Damian explained, his eyes glowing with pride. "We’re building a state-of-the-art sensory sanctuary and learning facility. Free tuition for families who can't afford private care. And you... Natalie Carter... are the executive director."

Natalie covered her mouth with both hands, tears of joy filling her eyes. "Damian... this must have cost millions..."

"It’s clean money," he said softly, taking her hands. "Money used to build something beautiful. Something that ensures no child ever gets thrown out of a store or ignored because the world is too loud for them."

Natalie threw her arms around his neck, kissing him deeply.
