Chapter 5 - Safe Haven

The breach at the estate forced a complete change of strategy. The Moretti family had crossed an unforgivable line by sending armed hitmen into a house where a child lived. Damian knew that Chicago was about to become a warzone, and he refused to let Ava—or Natalie—be caught in the crossfire.
By dawn, two heavily armored SUVs drove them out of Illinois, deep into the secluded woods of upper Michigan, where Damian owned a private, unlisted estate overlooking Lake Superior.
The retreat was sprawling, constructed from warm timber and stone, surrounded by acres of private pine forest. Here, far from the city noise and concrete, the atmosphere was strikingly peaceful.
For the first week, Damian was constantly on his satellite phone, directing his syndicate’s defense from afar. Yet, whenever he stepped away from his work, his focus locked onto Natalie and Ava.
Without the chaotic noise of Chicago, Natalie saw a completely different side of Damian DeLuca. She saw the father who patiently sat on the grass trying to understand how Ava organized her toy cars by color. She saw the man who noticed that Natalie preferred her coffee with milk and two sugars, personally bringing her a mug every morning.
One evening, after Ava had fallen fast asleep in her custom sensory bedroom, Natalie found Damian sitting on the back deck, staring out over the black, misty expanse of the lake.
"You should get some sleep," Natalie said quietly, wrapping her cardigan tight against the cool night breeze.
Damian turned, a soft smile touching his lips. "I don't sleep much these days. Too many thoughts."
He pointed to the wooden chair beside him. Natalie sat down.
"I owe you an apology, Natalie," Damian said softly, looking out at the water. "I dragged you into a life of guns and security codes. You signed up to be an educator, not a shield."
"I made my choice when I accepted your card," Natalie replied gently. "And watching you with Ava... I know who you really are, Damian. You aren't the monster the newspapers paint you to be."
Damian turned to face her, his gaze intense under the moonlight. "I'm no saint, Natalie. I’ve done violent things to protect what's mine. But when I look at you... you make me want to tear down every dark piece of my past and build something clean."
Natalie’s heart skipped a beat. "Damian..."
He reached out, his warm, broad hand gently cupping her cheek. His thumb brushed over her cheekbone with incredible tenderness.
"You brought life back into this family, Natalie. Ava loves you. And God help me... I think I’m falling in love with you too."
Natalie felt a lump form in her throat. For weeks, she had tried to deny the growing attraction, hiding behind professional boundaries. But standing here in the quiet woods, feeling the warmth of his hand, she couldn't deny it anymore.

"I think I’ve been falling for you too," she whispered back.
Damian leaned in slowly, giving her every chance to pull away. When she didn't, his lips met hers in a kiss that was deep, passionate, and full of unspoken promises.
