Chapter 6 - The Viper in the Shadow

For three weeks, the cabin in Michigan felt like a paradise detached from reality. Damian, Natalie, and Ava lived almost like a normal family. They walked through the pine trails, cooked dinners together, and spent long afternoons reading in the sunroom. Ava’s communication skills flourished; she began expressing full sentences, telling her father stories about her favorite books.
The bond between Natalie and Damian deepened into something profound. They shared quiet late-night conversations, uncovering each other’s pasts, dreams, and hidden wounds.
However, the bliss was shattered on a cold Tuesday morning.
Thomas arrived at the lodge unexpectedly, carrying a heavy leather briefcase and a grim expression.
"Damian, we have a massive problem," Thomas said, stepping into the study.
Natalie, who was passing the doorway with a tray of tea, paused as she heard the urgency in Thomas’s voice.
"What is it?" Damian asked, leaning over his desk.
"The federal task force just issued a secret subpoena for your asset ledgers," Thomas revealed, pulling out confidential documents. "The Morettis didn't just try to attack you physically—they bought off someone inside our legal team. Someone handed over our encrypted financial routing codes to the FBI."
Damian’s jaw tightened. "Who was the mole?"
"We're still tracing the leak, but it came from an IP address linked to the internal network three weeks ago," Thomas said cautiously. Then, he hesitated, looking toward the open door. "Damian... the access timestamp matches the night before we evacuated Chicago. The night Natalie was left alone in your study while you were clearing the perimeter."
Natalie felt the world stop. The tea tray trembled in her hands.
"Watch your tongue, Thomas," Damian warned, his voice turning dangerously dark.
"I'm just delivering the forensic audit, Boss," Thomas insisted gently. "Her mother had debts. Her background is clean, but maybe Moretti threatened her sister. You have to admit the timing is suspicious."
Natalie stepped into the study, her face pale, her heart shattering into a thousand pieces.
"I didn't do it," she said, her voice shaking with emotion.
Damian turned quickly, his eyes wide with shock. "Natalie..."
"I didn't touch your computer, Damian," she cried, tears brimming in her eyes. "I spent my entire life being honest. I would never—never—put you or Ava in danger!"
Damian looked at Thomas, then back at Natalie. The cold, distrustful instincts of a man who had been betrayed a hundred times warred against the deep love he felt for the woman standing before him.
"Natalie, calm down," Damian said gently, reaching out toward her. "I'm not accusing you."
"But he is!" Natalie pointed a shaking finger at Thomas. "And part of you is wondering if he’s right! You think because I came from nothing, I could be bought?"

"No!" Damian insisted forcefully, stepping toward her. "I don't think that!"
"I need some air," Natalie sobbed, stepping backward, unable to bear the doubt floating in the room. She turned and ran out of the lodge into the brisk forest air, leaving Damian shouting her name behind her.
