Chapter 5 - Echoes in the Dark

The panic room beneath the library was a reinforced underground bunker built with foot-thick reinforced steel and independent air filtration systems. Monitored camera screens lined the wall, showing live feeds of the estate ground.

Mateo shoved us inside and locked the heavy steel door from the outside, leaving us safely locked in the dark subterranean sanctuary with two heavily armed loyal guards.

I sat on a leather bench, rocking Marcus in my arms as the low thud of gunfire vibrated through the foundation above us. Marcus buried his face in my neck, his little shoulders shaking.

"Shh, baby, it's okay," I whispered softly, kissing his forehead. "Mommy's here. Mister Dominic is taking care of everything."

"Is the bad bug man coming?" Marcus sniffled.

"No, sweetie. Dominic won't let anyone hurt us."

I turned my attention to the security monitors on the wall. The camera feeds captured a violent, high-stakes gunfight unfolding in the grand courtyard. Unmarked black SUVs had smashed through the iron gates, spilling armed mercenaries dressed in tactical gear into the courtyard.

But Dominic’s men were prepared. The Cray family defenders moved with lethal coordination, taking defensive positions behind stone pillars and marble fountains.

Then I saw Dominic on the screen.

He moved with chilling efficiency and terrifying grace. For three years, his enemies had assumed he was a weakened, helpless figurehead. But free from the disorienting acoustic blockage that had plagued his equilibrium, Dominic was a master tactician. He communicated orders swiftly over radio frequencies, flanking the mercenaries and cutting off their retreat routes.

Through the main monitors, I saw a large silver SUV pull up near the conservatory steps. A tall, sharply dressed man with silver hair stepped out under the cover of several bodyguards.

"Julian Moretti," one of the guards in the panic room murmured, recognizing the intruder.

Julian was holding a heavy assault rifle, directing his men toward the main residence. He believed Dominic was defenseless, trapped inside without his trusted manager Victor to organize his defense.

On the screen, Dominic stepped out onto the upper balcony overlooking the conservatory entrance. He stood fully exposed, looking down at Julian.

Julian looked up and sneered, raising his rifle. Through the high-definition security audio system inside the panic room, we could hear the exterior audio picking up their exchange.

"It's over, Dominic!" Julian shouted over the gunfire. "Victor failed to report, but it changes nothing! Your empire is hollow! You're a deaf old ghost ruling over a kingdom of ashes!"

Dominic looked down at Julian with icy contempt. He slowly reached up to his right ear, tapped it gently, and spoke into his chest microphone. His voice echoed through the courtyard's public address speakers, loud and clear.

"I can hear you, Julian," Dominic said, his voice cold and booming. "I can hear every lie, every threat, and every bullet you brought into my home."

Julian’s face froze in absolute terror. The color drained from his face as he realized the truth. The strategic advantage he had relied on for three years had vanished into thin air.

"How... how is that possible?!" Julian screamed, panic breaking through his confident demeanor.

"You relied on traitors and secret trinkets," Dominic replied coldly. "You forgot that an empire isn't built on hearing... it's built on strength."

Dominic raised his hand, signaling his hidden marksmen on the roof lines. Red laser sights instantly peppered Julian’s chest and bodyguards.

"Drop your weapons," Dominic ordered. "Or this courtyard becomes your graveyard."

Within seconds, the remaining Moretti mercenaries, seeing their leader completely trapped and outmaneuvered, threw down their rifles and raised their hands in surrender. Julian dropped his weapon, his knees buckling as Dominic’s men rushed in to secure him.

The battle was over in less than twenty minutes.

Down in the panic room, the heavy steel door unlatched with a loud mechanical hiss. The heavy door swung open, and Dominic stood in the doorway. His suit jacket had a smudge of soot, but he was completely unharmed.

He stepped inside, his eyes immediately finding me and Marcus.

"It is over," Dominic said softly, his voice full of relief. "The estate is secure. Julian Moretti and his men are in custody."

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for hours. Marcus looked up from my lap, blinking at Dominic.

"Mister Dominic?" Marcus called out softly. "Did you beat the bad men?"

May you like

Dominic walked over and knelt beside us, extending his hand. Marcus reached out and wrapped his little fingers around Dominic’s thumb.

"Yes, Marcus," Dominic said, his eyes softening with deep, genuine emotion. "We beat them. And you gave me the strength to do it."
