Chapter 4 - The Shattered Mirage

The next morning broke under a heavy shroud of grey mist. The Cray manor was buzzing with suppressed tension. Armed men in dark suits moved purposefully through the marble corridors, checking firearms, reviewing tactical maps, and establishing secure communication lines.
In the central study, Dominic sat behind his heavy mahogany desk. For three years, this room had been a quiet sanctuary where he read reports in absolute silence. Today, it was a war room. Radios crackled, phones rang, and his lieutenants spoke in rapid, urgent tones. Dominic absorbed every sound with fierce intensity, taking in the cadence of voices he hadn't heard in years.
I stood near the corner of the room, holding a mug of warm coffee while Marcus sat on a plush carpet nearby, playing with a set of wooden building blocks that Dominic’s staff had retrieved for him.
Mateo, the hulking head of security, slammed a leather-bound folder onto the desk. "Boss, we interrogated Victor for four hours. He broke. He confirmed that Julian Moretti personally provided the acoustic dampening device. It was engineered by a disgraced military contractor in Europe. Victor was paid fifty million dollars over three years to keep you isolated while Moretti systematically took control of our port authorities."
Dominic leaned back, tapping his fingers on the armrest. "And the meet tonight at Dock 17?"
"It's still on," Mateo replied. "Julian doesn't know Victor has been exposed. Victor was supposed to send a coded confirmation signal at 8:00 PM tonight to confirm that you signed over the deed to the south side logistics hub."
"Then we send the signal," Dominic said, his voice flat and decisive. "We set the trap. But we don't just take Julian. We need to expose every insider who took Moretti's money inside our own organization. Victor couldn't have managed this entire network alone. There are other traitors in this house."
My stomach tightened as I listened. The reality of Dominic's world was terrifying. Loyalty was currency, and betrayal was punished with death.
Dominic’s gaze shifted to me. He held up his hand, signaling Mateo to pause. "Elena, come here."
I walked over to the desk, keeping my steps cautious. "Yes, Dominic?"
"You look exhausted," he said gently, noting the dark circles under my eyes. "You didn't sleep last night."
"It's hard to sleep when you realize you're sitting in the middle of a mafia war," I confessed candidly.
Dominic offered a rare, genuine nod of acknowledgment. "I understand your fear, Elena. You were dragged into a storm you didn't create. But I give you my word of honor—as long as I draw breath, no harm will come to you or Marcus. Victor threatened your job yesterday. Today, I am offering you a permanent position."
I blinked in surprise. "A position?"
"My personal estate manager," Dominic explained. "Victor’s former role, minus the treason. You have an eye for detail, you are fiercely protective, and most importantly, you are honest. You showed more courage and integrity yesterday than men who have taken oaths of loyalty to me for decades."
"Dominic... I'm just a catering assistant," I said, stunned by the proposition. "I don't know how to run an estate like this."
"You learn quickly," Dominic replied, his eyes holding mine with unshakeable confidence. "And unlike everyone else in this building, I know you cannot be bought."
Before I could answer, a frantic guard burst through the study doors, his face pale. "Boss! We have a breach on the perimeter security feed!"
Dominic instantly stood up, his eyes sharpening into steel. "What is it?"
"A convoy of unmarked SUVs just blew through the outer gate! They have heavy firepower!"
Alarm sirens suddenly wailed throughout the estate, their piercing shrieks echoing through the stone walls. Marcus dropped his blocks and cried out in terror, running toward me. I scooped him up into my arms immediately, clutching him tightly against my chest.
"Julian Moretti didn't wait for the meeting," Mateo growled, pulling a tactical sidearm from his shoulder holster. "Victor missed a routine check-in signal an hour ago. Moretti realized something went wrong!"
"They came to finish the job," Dominic said coldly. He pulled a concealed drawer from under his desk, revealing a sleek black pistol. He racked the slide with practiced precision.
He turned to me, his voice calm despite the sirens and distant sound of automatic gunfire breaking out near the main gates. "Mateo, take Elena and Marcus to the panic room beneath the library. Secure the blast doors. Nobody enters until I personally give the command."

"Dominic, be careful!" I yelled over the deafening noise.
He looked back at me, a fierce, protective fire burning in his hazel eyes. "I spent three years in the dark, Elena. I'm not going back. Protect Marcus. I will handle the rest."
