Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The violation of the restraining order was the final straw for the district attorney. David’s bail was revoked, and he was remanded into custody at the county jail to await trial.

With David behind bars, the Vance family’s defense began to fracture. Richard, realizing that his own career and freedom were on the line, desperately tried to distance himself from his brother.

Elena and Sarah Jenkins sat in a sterile deposition room, waiting. Across the table sat Richard Vance, looking ten years older than he had two weeks ago. His high-priced defense attorney sat beside him, looking grim.

"We want to make a deal," Richard’s attorney said simply.

Sarah Jenkins leaned back, crossing her legs. "We aren't interested in a settlement, Richard. We are going to trial. We have the financial records, we have the restaurant footage, and we have the recording of you attempting to intimidate my client."

"I didn't know about the money laundering!" Richard lied, his voice cracking. "David handled those accounts. I just signed where he told me to. I’ll testify against him. I’ll tell the court everything about his assets, his offshore accounts, how he abused Maya... just keep my name out of the federal indictment."

Elena looked at the man who had once stood at her daughter's wedding, smiling and raising a glass of champagne to "family."

"You watched him treat her like garbage for five years, Richard," Elena said, her voice quiet but heavy with judgment. "You laughed at his jokes. You helped him hide her money so she would be trapped. And now, you’re ready to throw him to the wolves to save your own skin. You Vances really have no concept of loyalty, do you?"

Richard looked down, unable to meet her gaze.

"Here is our offer," Sarah Jenkins said, sliding a document across the table. "You will surrender all joint assets of the Vance firm to Maya as part of a civil restitution claim. You will resign from the bar association, effectively ending your legal career. In exchange, we will recommend to the federal prosecutor that your cooperation be considered for a reduced sentence. If you refuse, we go to trial, and you will spend the next fifteen years in a federal penitentiary."

Richard stared at the document. His hands shook as he took out his pen. "Where do I sign?"

Meanwhile, Rebecca Vance was facing her own ruin. The social circles she had spent her entire life cultivating had completely shut her out. The country club suspended her membership due to the "negative publicity," and her wealthy friends stopped answering her calls.

One afternoon, Elena met Rebecca in a quiet park. Rebecca had begged for the meeting, hoping to appeal to Elena "as a mother."

"You have to stop this, Elena," Rebecca wept, her expensive makeup running down her face. "David is my only son. He can't handle prison. He’s sensitive. This will destroy him. Please, ask Maya to drop the charges. We will give her the house, the money, anything!"

Elena looked at the woman who had clapped while her son dragged a young woman by her hair.

"You called it a 'minor domestic correction,' Rebecca," Elena said softly. "You said a wife needs to know her place. Well, now it's time for you to learn yours. Your place is in the gallery, watching your son pay for his crimes. You raised a monster, and instead of stopping him, you cheered him on. This is your legacy."

Elena stood up and walked away, leaving Rebecca sobbing on the park bench, finally realizing that no amount of money or pearls could save them now.
