Chapter 4 - The Art of War

The legal battle began not with a whimper, but with a roar.
Representing Maya was Sarah Jenkins, a legendary family law attorney known as the "Iron Lily" for her elegant but lethal courtroom presence. Within forty-eight hours of taking the case, Sarah filed for a temporary restraining order against David and Rebecca, exclusive use of the marital home for Maya, and a freeze on all joint marital assets pending a full forensic audit.
David’s legal team, led by his arrogant brother Richard, countered immediately. They filed a motion to dismiss the restraining order, claiming the restaurant incident was an isolated, exaggerated family dispute. They also launched a smear campaign, leaking falsified stories to local tabloids claiming Maya was a spendthrift with a history of alcohol abuse.
Maya sat in Sarah's high-rise office, crying as she read an article online that painted her as an unstable, gold-digging wife. "They're turning everyone against me, Mom. My old friends aren't even returning my texts. They think I'm a liar."
"They want you to feel isolated, Maya," Sarah Jenkins said, leaning across her mahogany desk. "Abusers use isolation as a weapon. They want you to beg for the settlement just to make the noise stop. But what they don't know is that we have the ultimate shield."
Sarah turned to Elena. "Elena, did you find what we needed?"
Elena placed a thick black binder on the desk. "David thinks he’s a genius because he’s an attorney. But he made a classic mistake. He assumed his wife was stupid, so he never locked his home office desk. And he assumed I was just a retired schoolteacher."
Inside the binder were copies of tax returns, bank statements, and wire transfer receipts spanning five years.
"David has been funneling money out of their joint accounts into a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under his mother’s maiden name," Elena explained, her finger tracing a series of transactions. "He’s been doing this to make it look like his personal income is much lower than it actually is, likely preparing for a divorce he wanted to initiate on his own terms later on. But more importantly... look at the co-signers on this shell company."
Sarah’s eyes widened as she looked at the documents. "Richard Vance. His brother. And their law firm’s trust account."
"Exactly," Elena said, a cold triumph in her voice. "This isn't just a divorce asset dispute anymore. This is tax fraud, money laundering, and embezzlement of client funds through their firm. They didn't just abuse my daughter; they committed federal crimes to hide the evidence."
"Oh, this is beautiful," Sarah whispered, a fierce smile spreading across her face. "They wanted to drag Maya through the mud. Now, we are going to bury them in it."

The next day, instead of responding to the smear campaign in the press, Sarah filed an amended petition in court. It didn't just ask for a standard divorce; it accused David and his brother's firm of systemic financial fraud, demanding a court-ordered federal audit of Vance & Associates.
When Richard Vance received the filing, he reportedly broke a glass desk in his office. The game had completely changed. They were no longer fighting to protect David's pride—they were fighting to keep themselves out of federal prison.
