Chapter 5 - The Crack in the Armor

The pressure on the Vance family began to mount at an agonizing pace.

With the threat of a federal audit looming, clients of Vance & Associates began to panic. Major corporate accounts, terrified of being associated with a firm accused of money laundering and domestic abuse, began pulling their contracts. The firm’s stock plummeted, and several senior partners demanded that David be suspended immediately.

But David, driven by narcissism and his mother's constant whispering in his ear, refused to back down.

"You are a Vance!" Rebecca hissed at him in her lavish living room, pouring him another glass of whiskey. "You do not let that pathetic girl and her schoolteacher mother ruin what we built. Richard will find a way out of this. They are bluffing."

"They aren't bluffing, Mom!" David yelled, his hair disheveled, his expensive suit wrinkled. "They have the Cayman accounts! How did they get those? Only you and Richard had those files!"

"It doesn't matter," Rebecca snapped. "We fight harder. We need to get to Maya. Without her testimony, the domestic assault charge falls apart. If she drops the charges, the public interest dies, and we can handle the financial audit quietly. Find her, David. Remind her of who she is without you."

Against the strict conditions of his bail and the active restraining order, David decided to take matters into his own hands.

It was a rainy Tuesday evening. Maya was staying at Elena's house. Elena had gone to the grocery store, leaving Maya alone for the first time in weeks. Maya was sitting in the living room, trying to read, when she heard a soft knock at the back door.

Her heart leaped into her throat. She crept to the kitchen window and peered out.

Through the rain, she saw David. He wasn't wearing his usual pristine suit. He looked desperate, his wet hair plastered to his forehead, his eyes wild.

"Maya!" he called out through the glass, his voice muffled but urgent. "Maya, please open the door. I just want to talk. I’m sorry. You know I love you. The restaurant... I was stressed. The firm was putting so much pressure on me. My mother was whispering in my ear. Please, baby, don’t let your mother ruin our life. We can start over. Just drop the charges, and we can leave this place. We can go to Europe."

Maya stared at him. For a split second, a tiny, wounded part of her wanted to believe him. She remembered the man she had fallen in love with—the charming, attentive man who had promised to protect her.

But then she looked down at her hands. She remembered the feeling of her scalp being ripped backward. She remembered the mocking laughter of his mother. She remembered the years of being told she was nothing, that she was stupid, that she was lucky he even looked at her.

The illusion was gone. The spell was broken.

Maya didn't open the door. Instead, she calmly walked over to the kitchen counter, picked up her phone, and dialed 911. Then, she opened the back window just a crack.

"David," she said, her voice steady and entirely devoid of fear.

He smiled, thinking he had won. "Maya, thank God—"

"I am calling the police," she interrupted. "You are violating a restraining order. Every word you are saying is being recorded by my mother's security cameras. Go away, David. Or go back to jail. Those are your only choices."

David’s face twisted in an instant from desperate lover to raging monster. He slammed his fist against the double-paned glass of the door. "You ungrateful b*tch! You're nothing without me! I made you! If you do this, I will destroy your life! I'll make sure you never see a dime!"

"I don't need your money, David," Maya said, her voice echoing with a strength she didn't know she possessed. "Because I finally have myself back."

The distant wail of police sirens began to echo through the neighborhood. Realizing he had been set up, David cursed loudly, turned, and fled into the rainy night, slipping on the wet grass as he ran.

He had just sealed his own fate.
