Chapter 7 - THE CONFRONTATION AND THE ARREST

David’s composure completely cracked. Realizing that his elaborate scheme was entirely exposed, he abandoned all pretense of grief or innocence.
“You think you’ve won, Adrianna?!” David snarled, taking an aggressive step toward me before Captain Miller drew his sidearm and aimed it directly at his chest. “Don't move! Hands where we can see them!”
David ignored the warning, shouting at me over the officers’ heads. “You were nothing before I met you! A grieving, pathetic heiress sitting on a fortune she didn’t know how to run! I built Vance Global into what it is today! I deserved that money! That fortune belongs to me!”
“You didn’t build anything, David,” I said calmly, looking down at him with utter disdain. “You stole forty million dollars through Cayman shell accounts. You poisoned my body, tried to erase my sanity, and terrorized an innocent child. You are not a genius. You are a common thief and a coward.”
“You can’t prove anything!” Maggie screamed, struggling against an officer who was securing her wrists in handcuffs. “I am a senior citizen! I had nothing to do with his business! David, tell them I didn’t know!”
“Shut up, Mother!” David roared, turning on her in desperate panic. “She’s the one who wanted to speed up the timeline! She’s the one who brought the belladonna extract from Europe! It was her idea!”
“You treacherous snake!” Maggie shrieked, attempting to kick at her own son as the officers pulled them apart. “I did everything for you! You useless, incompetent failure!”
The grand foyer of my father’s estate, once a place of quiet fear and suppressed toxicity, filled with the chaotic squabbling of two monsters turning on each other the moment their fortress of lies collapsed.
Captain Miller stepped forward, reading David his Miranda rights in a clear, booming voice.
“David Vance, you are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, embezzlement, and felony child abuse.”
As the officers cuffed David’s hands behind his back and began leading him toward the door, he looked back over his shoulder at me. His eyes were wild, desperate, and filled with defeat.
Just then, Owen stepped out onto the balcony at the top of the stairs, holding Whitney’s hand. He looked down at his father without a trace of the terror that had controlled him for years.
Owen leaned over the railing and spoke in a clear, ringing voice that echoed off the high marble walls.

“Goodbye, Dad.”
David flinched as if he had been struck by lightning. The sound of his silent son’s voice delivering his final judgment broke whatever remained of his arrogant spirit. He hung his head, sobbing pathetically as the federal agents pushed him out into the morning sunlight and into the back of a police cruiser.
